Before I moved to SK, the word "harvest" was a bit of an abstract concept. You know, maybe something we learned about in school with old-timey images of early settlers and part of the Thanksgiving story.
Now that I've spent countless hours across rural Saskatchewan, the word has an entirely different meaning. It is literally about survival. An unexpected 5-minute storm can wipe out a crop in a blink of an eye.
Harvest is about all-hands-on-deck. It's food being brought into the fields for family dinners, it's working all night, neighbours pitching in, communities coming together to get it "in the bin".
On the radio, there are province-wide reports on the percentage of the season's bounty that's been safely collected.
And when it's done - in legions, halls and churches dotted across the province, communities come together for Fall Suppers. It's a beautiful thing.
For what is often called a "flyover, gas stop" province, there is something special going on in Saskatchewan with families, connection and community.
