It’s not too often I have flowers at home, mostly obviously because I sell them ….. but I was cleaning out my walk-in and these absolute beauties are left over from the wedding show. They have past their prime and I’m just not ready to let them go. There is always one shelf in the fridge with flowers that really should be tossed, that I definitely cannot use or even give away in good conscious, for some reason I hang onto them until the bitter end! It’s a flaw I have that will probably never change!! But here are some tips to help you get the absolute longest out of your flowers (which should be enjoyed in the moment and are fleeting bla bla)
Keep the water as clear as possible and always topped up… DAILY!! That’s the biggest one
Keep the flowers out of the sun and away from all heat and drafts, heat pumps are a flower killer
Remove all greenery from the flower stem, the energy in that stem is being used to keep the whole thing alive… if you remove the leaves the bloom will last longer.
Give the stems a fresh cut every few days, Sometimes the stems will stop taking up water and giving them a fresh snip will help.
Use room temperature water… if the water is too warm the flowers will open too quickly…. If it’s too cold it could prevent them from taking up water properly.
This one is for hydrangeas, if they wilt in a vase…. Take it out of the vase, dunk it upside down in water for 5 mins, take it out and cut an inch off that baby and immediately put it back in the water, less than an hour it’s back in business… don’t give up on them!! They don’t want you to!
One other little tip, the closer the bloom is to the water source, the longer it will last, if you have a rose floating in a bowl of water and you keep that water clear, it will last you a month!
