Tej Hunjan (tabla) and Chris D. Hail (sitar) walk through their experience during a recent performance as they showcased North Indian repertoire.

Sitar and tabla don’t just play together; they converse, one bending notes into raga phrases while the other locks down intricate tala cycles underneath. This duet format captures the heart of Hindustani classical music: melodic improvisation balanced against rhythmic precision, tension and release built into every phrase. It’s a sound rooted in centuries of tradition, still capable of filling a room with something that feels entirely present.

Toronto born, Antiguan and Barbudan rooted, Joy turns the steelpan into a tool for connection, using her artistry to spotlight the women who’ve shaped the steelband movement. From sharing stages with Andy Narell and Gramps Morgan to festival runs at Montreal Jazz Fest and Miami’s Ground Up, her sound blends Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian rhythm with room to improvise.

Diar (دْيَار) is a Syrian-Canadian duo blending traditional Syrian and Arabic music with flamenco influences. Featuring fretless guitar, riq, darbuka, and frame drum, Diar offers rich cultural textures with accessible rhythms suited for diverse audiences.

Founded in Toronto in 2018, Diar has performed at the Aga Khan Museum, Royal Conservatory of Music, Canadian Opera Company events, Tirgan Festival, Luminato Festival, SOFAR Sounds, and major civic celebrations.
