Today is Green Sports Day, a worldwide celebration of the positive impact sports can have for people and the planet.
The day calls on organizations across sport to Impact Community, Demonstrate Leadership and Inspire Action. At Spruce Meadows, we’re marking it by recognizing the work of our Manager of Health, Safety and Sustainability, Ron Heathcott.
Ron is leading efforts to better understand and reduce the environmental impact of our operations, from how waste is managed across our property and events to how we measure progress and set goals for continued improvement.
This year, that work reached a major milestone.
Under Ron’s leadership, the August 1 Cavalry FC match achieved TRUE Gold certification from Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), with 90% of event waste diverted from landfill.
“For an event, venue waste is the largest sustainability element seen. Spruce Meadows has been examining its waste to be better stewards of the land and to be more intentional of what the organization does,” said Ron.
“At Spruce Meadows, we pride ourselves on being world class and this is a natural next step for the organization. For the animals we care for, and the community Spruce Meadows is a part of, it makes perfect sense to endeavour to be better and Spruce Meadows is excited by its first achievement in hopefully a long line.”
For Ron, the certification marks an important milestone in the work already underway and sets a benchmark for what can be achieved as we continue working toward 90% waste diversion at major events by 2030.
Today, we’re proud to celebrate Ron, congratulate him on this milestone and recognize the work he continues to lead across Spruce Meadows.
