More context for anyone curious ↓
I first came across woven macramé at the beach while I was at Bluesfest in 2024. I’ve always been around art and scroll work, and seeing people create complex 3D forms using nothing but string, time, energy and care really stuck with me.

After my Sphere experiences and Dead & Company concerts, I kept noticing macramé in the scene but never pieces made specifically for the Dead audience. I wanted to try creating something intentional, something that feels right for the wearer who genuinely identifies with it.

This collection is about the pieces themselves. Texture, movement, light, and how they sit on the body. Made for future Dead shows, jam and grass scenes, festivals, in Australia, the US, or wherever the road takes you.

Custom Tie Dye Tee, pink, green and blue

The final result had me thinking it was Oz themed

I try to avoid Ai for most of what Im building but I couldnt help myself, by generating the background image for this one

You can order a custom dye with this graphic to your liking here: https://unclekens.com/b/customtiedye

Once again, just to reiterate the process
1. Blank Tee soaked in Soda Ash Water Solution
2. Shirt is laid out on a wet table and folded to the pattern (This one is a spiral)
3. Tied using elastic bands or sinew
4. Dye's filled from powder and applied
5. Soaked overnight
6. Hand washed
7. Machine washed

Thats the basics, a couple of learnt techniques inbetween

Theres alot of time, labour and care that goes into this, every peice I consider keeping but Im glad it goes to those that see its worth!

Rest in peace, Bob Weir.

Thankyou for the Music and more

Here he is playing one of my most memorable dead songs with John Mayer at the Sphere on July 12, 2024.

I was lucky to receive a miracle for my first dead concert as I had a spare day before my July 13th event

I never got around to sharing this video but it represents so much to me learning about this scene and community paired with how beautiful the melody of this song is.

The lyrics ring even truer now with 'the old man getting on'

With so many of the original Grateful Dead figures having passed on, it’s up to us or the younger generation to carry that torch on

The world needs that energy and that understanding of what the Dead were all about

Hope you understand that we are the ones with the power and spirit to keep that energy alive

💀🌿🇦🇺 Graham repping the Dead down under

Grab your tee at unclekens.com

Meet Graham, a Deadhead who’s been living in Brisbane for the past 20 years but whose connection to the music goes right back to the early ’90s US jam band scene.

He was introduced to the Dead in high school and quickly fell deep into the world of live shows, extended jams, and bands like Phish and the wider jam family 🎸

The Dead had a big influence on Graham’s own guitar playing, and he still finds himself coming back to classic Dead covers when he picks it up. Lately he’s been revisiting early ’80s versions of Althea and Sugaree, with a soft spot for the acoustic side of things too. Dead Reckoning still gets regular rotation in his world

After two decades in Brisbane, Graham knows there aren’t huge numbers of Deadheads around, but that doesn’t stop him from preaching the benefits of a healthy dose of live Dead to anyone willing to listen. He’s noticed familiar energy in newer scenes too, especially after recently seeing King Gizzard, where the fan culture reminded him a lot of that old jam band family feeling

Most recently, Graham flew the Down Under Dead colours at the Bellingen markets, where the shirt drew plenty of attention and even helped spark a new connection with a fellow Deadhead. He walked away with a plant from Dark Star Orchids and a new friend, which feels pretty on brand 🌱

That’s the magic. Music, community, and little moments that bring heads together in the wild

Thanks Graham for wearing the design with pride and keeping the spirit alive up north 💀

💀🇺🇸🌌 Duanne from all the way over in Wisconsin, USA rocking a custom tie dye and Aussie stealie to his style!

You can own a custom oz stealie tee by going to 🛒 unclekens.com 👍

Meet Duanne from the Driftless Region of Wisconsin, a rare part of the Midwest known for rolling hills, pine trees, snowfall, and quiet country living. After many years in the city, Duanne now lives in a log cabin out in nature, where life moves slower and the views stretch wide ❄️🌲

Duanne is a lifelong Deadhead and a longtime friend of Eric, who some of you might recognise from a previous post. Eric is now based in Queensland and is an avid photographer, and it was seeing Eric wearing his Uncle Ken’s tee that sparked Duanne’s interest and led him to grab one of his own. A proper full-circle Dead connection across countries and decades

Duanne comes from a mixed European background and his wife is Italian, which means one important thing. There is always good food at home. Home-cooked meals, real ingredients, and shared dinners are a big part of their life together 🍝

For his custom piece, Duanne asked for something that fit his personal style. Darker, subtle, and easy to wear with that quiet psychedelic edge underneath. We landed on a black and dark blue 3-stripe chevron tie dye with a washed-out fade. The result is a shirt that reveals itself slowly, with the gold Stealie standing out against the darker tones

Now retired, Duanne spends his days enjoying the simple things. Music, nature, good meals, front-porch views, and time with his wife while still carrying the Dead spirit into this quieter chapter of life 💀

Hes picking up a real christmas tree this eason and as you can tell one of the pictures is before his haircut! Looking sharp!

Custom tie dyes always welcome, I care more about sharing the music and the energy than the money so reach out if its something you would like to be a part of!

Meet Gerry O’Connor, a Melbourne Deadhead through and through. He first heard the Grateful Dead back in school in the late 60s when mates introduced him to the music, and it stuck with him for life.

Gerry never caught the band live because he spent years living in an ashram and raising a family, but the music stayed with him the whole way. He still goes back to albums like Live Dead, Europe 72, American Beauty, Wake of the Flood and Blues for Allah, listening to the band explore, interact and search for the sound. As Phil said, they aren’t the best at what they do. They’re the only ones who do what they do. ⚡️🎶

The photo came from my friend Abby, whose partner fronts a group keeping the Melbourne dead scene alive with their residency at Lulie Tavern. Gerry was there the other night and the timing lined up perfectly. 🎸🌙

The tee he’s wearing started as a blank from me. Gerry dyed it himself with turmeric and it came out great. He’s keen to try tea, coffee, black beans and a bit of pH shifting with vinegar and baking soda next. I can’t promise the prints will survive every dye experiment, so try it at your own risk for now, but his one turned out beautifully. 🌿🟡

Gerry’s active in the Aussie Dead community as well, always sharing old clips, stories and anything interesting about Kesey, Cassady, Babbs and the Prankster days. He’s one of those listeners who tunes in properly, hears what’s happening and lets the music take him somewhere. 🚍🌈

If you grab a tee, I’ll do my best to give you a spotlight too. I’m also running a small offer where customers get a sticker sent at no cost if they send a photo wearing their shirt that I can post. Limited run, so send your pics while it lasts. 🌹📸

Meet another Ken! Originally from New York 🗽🇺🇸, now living the sea change life in Hervey Bay, Queensland 🌊

Ken’s been a Deadhead since the 1970s, catching shows across the U.S., and has kept the spirit alive Down Under by volunteering at Bluesfest for the past three years, giving him access to live music and the vibrant community he loves 🎵

After a long career running security and management for a large jewelry manufacturer in the U.S. and Mexico, and working in business development here in Australia, Ken has retired to focus on his passions. He’s been playing guitar since age 9, even building three electric guitars over 18 months in NSW — though he realized he prefers playing over building 🎸

Ken’s wife is a yoga instructor, and together they’ve embraced coastal living, exploring beaches, bushland, and everything Queensland has to offer 🌿

🔥 He’s rocking a custom request with a white tee with the iconic Red Tailed Black Cockatoo in the center and a Steelie on the back⚡🌹

Meet Alan M, from New Jersey, just outside New York City 🗽

He was recently down under and wanted to merge his passion for the Dead with a keepsake from his trip, a souvenir that carries the spirit of dimensions like Australia, the Greatful Dead and the US

He’s been collecting concert tees since the 1980s, with two Totes containers full of them - so when he says this one’s good quality fabric, you know it’s the real deal.

Alan’s a lifelong Deadhead who catches cover bands most weeks, and he’s a regular at Grateful Tuesday at The Orange Lantern in Paramus, NJ - a jam that’s been going strong every Tuesday for over four years (except NYE and Christmas Eve). 🎵

🔥 Alan’s rocking a 4-colour chevron tie-dye, a pattern I like to call “Toucan.”

Representing that East coast Dead energy. 💀🇺🇸⚡

Meet Eric B — from Queensland, originally from Chicago 🇦🇺🇺🇸

Eric’s been celebrating the Dead spirit all the way from Australia. He saw the Grateful Dead 13 times between 1986 and 1995, including Jerry Garcia’s final shows at Soldier Field, and returned for all three Fare Thee Well reunion shows in 2015.

Now 27 years into life in Australia, Eric still keeps the flame alive — he recently saw Billy Strings, is an avid photographer, and let me know that “the bus is always open to people with the right kind of mind.” ✌️

🌀 This shirt connects him with his music roots and Australian home, fusing two cultures that both live through colour, community, and freedom. 🌈⚡🌹
