Notes from a Wedding Bartender
After years behind the bar at weddings, I've learned there's a big difference between what couples think their guests will drink and what actually happens.
The first surprise?
Almost nobody sticks to one drink all night.
The guest who starts with sparkling w**e before the ceremony is often holding a b**r by sunset. The dedicated red w**e enthusiast somehow ends up with a wh**ky and cola on the dance floor. And the person who swore they'd only have one drink is usually the one requesting "just one more photo" at the end of the night.
B**r remains the undisputed champion of wedding bars.
Not craft b**r. Not imported b**r.
Just a good cold l***r.
Simple. Reliable. Impossible to argue with.
When the Adelaide Hills weather warms up, c***r suddenly becomes everyone's best mate.
W**e, surprisingly, plays a different role than many couples expect.
During the ceremony and pre-dinner celebrations, w**e often takes a back seat to b**r, bubbles and refreshing drinks. But once meals are served, red w**e comes into its own. A good Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon shared around the table is still one of the great traditions of a South Australian wedding.
And here in South Australia, we're spoiled.
A great Barossa Shiraz can turn a casual conversation into a passionate discussion about w**e, food and life itself. If you've never watched complete strangers become mates over a good South Australian red, you've missed one of life's simple pleasures.
Then the speeches finish.
The DJ turns up the volume.
The dance floor starts filling.
And that's when the spirits take over.
Jack Daniel's, CC & Dry, wh**ky and cola remain wedding favourites. Nobody needs an explanation, and everybody knows what they're getting. The later it gets, the more popular they become.
So what's the best bar strategy for a wedding?
After watching countless celebrations from the best seat in the house, my answer is simple:
Give people choice.
The b**r lovers want their b**r.
The w**e lovers want their w**e.
The spirits crowd want their favourites.
And everyone leaves feeling looked after.
That's why some of the happiest weddings we see are the ones with a sensible bar tab and plenty of options available.
Because great weddings aren't really about drinks.
They're about people.
The drinks just help start the conversations. โค๏ธ
