Petrol-blower-level performance without the petrol engine. This is a serious bit of kit, it has genuinely exceeded my expectations.

The Makita Australia UB004GZ is the most powerful blower I’ve ever used, including petrol-powered backpack blowers and I wasn’t expecting that.

It’s super quiet, surprisingly lightweight and incredibly functional. If you’re blowing large areas or reaching for a blower regularly, this one is definitely worth a look.

Specs that mean nothing to me, but might mean something to you:
• Up to 32 N blowing force
• Up to 345 km/h air speed
• 19.1 m³/min maximum air volume
• Dual battery ports with automatic switching
• Variable speed trigger and cruise control

Here’s a quick little video showing you some simple maintenance you can do on your own hedge trimmer at home.

I’m topping up the gearbox grease and using Clean-N-Lube on the blades to help keep everything in good condition.

My original 18V hedger is nearly seven years old now, and if I’m being honest, it probably should have had a lot more maintenance over those years.

But I guess that’s the silver lining. It’s a pretty good testament to how long these tools can last, even when you haven’t exactly been giving them the TLC they deserve.

We’re making up for lost time now. Better late than never!

150mm of rain later and the hedges are looking a little less than crisp.

I’ve been loving the extra length on the Makita UH009GZ XGT 750mm Hedge Trimmer compared to my old one. It makes tackling this hedge so much easier, and I find it easier to keep those lines straight and crisp.

I still reach for my smaller DUH602Z 600mm trimmer for shaping spheres, cutting back perennials and pruning around the garden. It’s great for those more detailed jobs, but for a hedge this size, that extra reach makes a real difference.

I’ve been putting the 450mm CF003GZ XGT/LXT Jobsite Fan and the 330mm CF002GZ XGT Jobsite Fan to the test for the last couple of months. From hot clear marquees to just getting jobs done in the shed they’ve been amazing.

The 450mm model gives you serious airflow, automatic oscillation and the flexibility to run on either a 40V Max XGT or 18V LXT battery, or AC power.

The 330mm XGT is the more compact option, with three speed settings and the ability to run on a 40V Max XGT battery or AC power.

I can’t pick a favourite so I just pack both.

VTOMAN initially sent us the FlashSpeed 2400 to run a wedding off-grid, but it’s ended up being one of those pieces of gear that gets used for just about everything.

We’ve put it through its paces this wedding season, charging phones, cameras, speakers and microphones, jump-starting cars and keeping Starlink running. I’ve even tested it on the urn and the fridge to see where its limits are.

Safe to say, I’ve been pretty impressed with how much use we’ve got out of it. What started as a solution for one off-grid wedding has become something we reach for all the time.

And with our caravan camping era just around the corner, I reckon it’s about to get even more use.
