There is a reason you won’t find stainless-steel workbenches at Melbourne Flower Merchant.

I didn’t want our florists designing flowers in something that felt like a production room.

Flowers eventually have to live somewhere — in a home, an office, a restaurant, a hotel, an event. As florists, we need to be able to imagine them there.

So I wanted our own working environment to feel like an interior.

Concrete. Timber. Gold. Different surfaces. Different backdrops.

After more than 32 years as a florist, I’ve made more bouquets than I could possibly count.

But I never want making another bouquet to feel like production.

I want to feel like I’m making it for the first time, every time.

And I want every florist who works at our bench to have the opportunity to feel that too.

That’s why the environment matters.

It’s not just where we sell flowers.

It’s where we think about them.

Lily of the Valley — one of spring’s most fleeting flowers.

Delicate, beautifully fragrant and traditionally a symbol of happiness.

For our spring edition of Before It Was Bottled, we collaborated with to create Lily of the Valley No.10 — fresh Lily of the Valley presented in our perfume bottle vase, tucked inside a Melbourne Flower Merchant Mini Tote and accompanied by a 1.5ml sample of Vive La Fleur eau de parfum.

Inspired by springtime in Paris during Les Années Folles, Vive La Fleur felt like the perfect fragrance to pair with one of spring’s most beautiful little moments.

Send it to someone you love. Brighten someone’s day. Or keep it for yourself.

The Lily of the Valley season is short.

Get yours before they’re gone — until next spring.

The first interior concepts we received for Melbourne Flower Merchant were beautiful.

And we rejected them.

They looked exactly like what people expected a flower shop to look like. That was precisely what we didn’t want.

We had around 166 square metres to work with and a significant events business that also needed to operate from the same space. So rather than starting with how the store should look, we started with how it needed to work.

What needed to be permanent? What needed to move? Where would the flowers go? How would the florists work? And what would the customer see?

Almost everything inside MFM is movable.

The counter was designed more like a hotel reception — somewhere that says welcome.

The tall shelving and ladder gave us somewhere to display the vessels we work with while keeping precious floor space free.

The sink was deliberately left visible because we wanted customers to see us hydrate and care for their flowers before they leave.

At the end of each day, the curtains come down across the working arches. The next morning, we raise them and start again.

And then there’s the gold door.

Behind it is the original vault of the building. We kept that one space private — a quiet room for thinking and developing ideas, surrounded by Fornasetti clouds.

Warm timber sits against concrete. The original columns were left exposed. Reo steel was the chosen material for plant stands because element that reinforces concrete.

St James gave us a little New York. For the built elements, I looked towards Milan. And somehow, together, it felt completely Melbourne.

There are very few things inside MFM that are there without a reason. We created a space that makes the flowers and the craft of flowers the hero.

BEFORE THERE WAS A BRAND

Before there was a name, there was a piece of butcher’s paper.

I sat down and started writing.

Not what the store should look like, but how it should work.

What had we learned from all our previous years in flowers? What did customers need? What did our florists need? What did the flowers need? Where had we created unnecessary work for ourselves before?

We weren’t designing a brand yet.

We were designing a business.

Only once we understood how that business could operate inside 555 did I really understand what it could become.

Then we could name it.

Melbourne Flower Merchant.

“Merchant” was very intentional.

Michael’s career had taken him through growing flowers, wholesaling flowers and owning some of Melbourne’s best-known flower stores. A merchant is a specialist trader, and the name was my way of acknowledging the extraordinary knowledge he had accumulated over those years.

Eventually, from the work we did developing the personality and voice of the business, came three very simple words.

We know flowers.

Ten years later, they still hold us accountable.

Before it was bottled, it bloomed.

Introducing Lily of the Valley No. 10 — our limited Spring Edition, created to celebrate 10 years of Melbourne Flower Merchant.

Fresh Lily of the Valley. A perfume-inspired glass vase. A little fragrance from Flâner.

Spring, in every sense.

Available online and in store until while Lily of the Valley is in season.

Finding 555

Before we opened the doors in 2016, Michael and I had already spent many years working in flowers. We had built businesses, made mistakes, learned a lot and reached a point where we wanted to challenge ourselves again.

We weren’t really looking to open another flower shop.

We wanted to take everything we knew and ask ourselves what we would do differently if we had the opportunity to start again.

How should a flower store work? How should it feel for the customer? For the florist? What did flowers actually need from the space?

Michael had been trying to convince me to look at a tenancy at St James

I remember walking down Bourke Street, turning into St James and seeing it.

High ceilings. Uneven floors. Concrete. An enormous glass frontage.

And almost immediately, I could see the store.

I’m a very visual person. It’s the same when I’m designing flowers for an event — I can often see the finished space in my mind before we’ve made anything.

That’s what happened at 555.

We had already spent more than 15 years working in the city, so we weren’t simply looking for foot traffic. We understood there was a difference between people moving through a city and people having enough space in their journey to stop, look and become curious.

The glass was particularly important.

Whatever we built behind it, people would see us working.

And I loved that.

It meant we could be completely transparent about what we did.

I walked away from that first visit incredibly excited.

I think I’d found the opportunity to push myself again.
