Somewhere along the way, this little patch of land became a pretty important part of Dreamstate.
For 5+ years now, we’ve been lucky enough to have access to some private property in NNSW as a place for Dreamstate and our events to grow.
Over that time we’ve sort of become caretakers of it too - through different owners, major floods, raging fires, plenty of times where nature had other plans, and a whole lot of figuring out what the place needed from us.
When we first started spending time out here, it was a very different place. Getting onto the property at all was difficult, there was barely any cleared space, water pooled everywhere breeding mozzies, and much of the property simply hadn’t been used or loved for a long time.
Slowly, weekend by weekend and event by event, that started to change.
Over the years we’ve cleared and opened up usable areas, improved access, dealt with drainage and problem spots, and gradually added permanent infrastructure to the property. What was once genuinely difficult to even use is now somewhere we can arrive, set up, work on things and actually host people properly.
One of the things we’ve always wanted Dreamstate to have is space - somewhere creative ideas can actually become real. Somewhere there’s room for projects that are too big, too strange, too loud, or simply take too long to make sense in an urban setting.
Having a permanent base has become a huge part of that. Instead of starting from zero every time, we can keep building on what’s already there - event by event, project by project, year by year.
There was a time when coming out here mostly meant mud, mozzies and figuring out how the hell we were going to make the place usable. Now it’s somewhere we actually look forward to spending our weekends, whether we’re building something, throwing an event or just sitting around a fire after a long day of work. And really, that’s what all the effort has been for.
We’re finally starting to have something we’ve wanted for a long time - a bit of a platform for creativity. Not just for our own ideas either, but somewhere other people can bring theirs too. Art, installations, music, strange projects, big ideas, things that need a bit more room to exist.
This NYE, we get to fill the place back up again for Terminus - with music, lights, art, friends, strangers, laughs, late nights and all the little moments that make these gatherings worth doing.
