Life Membership ✨

Ian Blades has achieved 37 years as a volunteer of the RAST. His involved commenced as a steward in the Beef Cattle section, and he moved onto the RAST Council in 2011, while remaining involved with beef cattle. Later he became involved in the feline section of the Show.
Ian assisted in the all feather section of the Show, judged the RAST Ambassador on a number of occasions, and judged three national rural ambassador finals. He was president of the Tasmanian Show Council for two years, and was State Delegate to the Federal Council of Agricultural Shows, moving to the position of Vice President of FCAS prior to the formation of Agricultural Shows of Australia. Ian was also a member of the committee that formed ASA.

Living Legend ✨

An important tradition of the Royal Hobart Show is the annual award of the Living Legend of the Show.

This is the foremost honour the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania can bestow on a living individual who has contributed to the success of the Society and the Royal Hobart Show.

This year’s recipient is Russell Cripps.

Russell has been involved in the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania for several decades and has been described as a key pillar of the Society.

He became the Ring Master for the equestrian section in the mid 1990’s, after joining the RAST Show Council in the early 1990’s. To this day, Russell remains Ring Master. He became the RAST Treasurer in 2002 after joining the Executive in the late 1990’s. He remains Treasurer, and is also a Director of RAST. Russel chairs the Society’s Finance and Audit Committee. He was Chair of the Redevelopment Committee prior to, and following the decision to lease a section of Showground land to allow the Bunnings development to proceed in 2014. In 2026 he remains on the Redevelopment Committee as the entire Showground precinct is transformed into a modern events precinct. Russell also remains on the equestrian committee, after being its Chair for many years.

Our Life on the Farm exhibit is one of the most loved and educational experiences at the Betta Milk Royal Hobart Show, and it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of Sorell School alongside RAST councillor, Kirilee.

From helping bring the farm to life to giving our visitors the opportunity to learn more about farm life, the contribution of the Sorell School community is truly invaluable.
