‘Reverie’ at the Naval Store

Fremantle Design Week

The name Reverie invokes a dreamlike state. Discover a world where ornament is celebrated, colour is embraced, and beauty exists in the unexpected.

Reverie is a major group exhibition that brings together local and national designers, makers and artists in a theatrical environment in Fremantle’s historic Naval Store.

The show is curated and designed by interior designer and editorial stylist Jessica Rayment (Jessica Alice Design), a self-described maximalist whose work rejects the ‘white box’ uniformity of contemporary interiors in favour of richly layered colour, texture and form.

Jessica explores a playful dialogue between old and new; rich timbers and nostalgic florals; polished steel and sculptural shapes

A NEW ARTIST OPPORTUNITY at the Naval Store by Vessel:

Groundswell is a new platform for emergent Western Australian artistic practice. Five to seven artists will be selected by a national curatorium for an exhibition at Vessel opening during July, 2027.

The images in this post are examples from previous presentations by Vessel and collaborative partners, they are here to inspire you but are not indicative of the work we expect.

This is an invitation for artists to extend their practice, to develop new ideas, work at greater scale, experiment with new forms and methodologies, or bring greater visibility to practices that have not yet had significant institutional exposure. Vessel’s unique scale and architecture provides a space for artists to test possibilities and present ambitious work to new audiences.  Emergent is understood broadly. It is not defined by age or career stage, but by practices, ideas and approaches that are developing or moving in new directions. This might include an artist at an early stage of their career, an established artist pursuing a significant shift in practice, interdisciplinary or experimental approaches, or work responding to changing cultural, social, environmental and geographic conditions.

Artists work here every day: painters, printmakers, graphic designers, jewellery makers, mural artists, photographers and more.

Although they are often missed, they keep the building alive with creative production between our public events and presentations!

Aajyna is Sabsabi’s first visual artwork, and an anchor point that he continues to reimagine.

In Aajyna Sabsabi returns to a significant childhood memory. As a young child he, along with his family, sought shelter and refuge underneath and between foundations of buildings during the Lebanese Civil War. They moved from building to building as the conflict took over the streets and, for days, stayed quiet in semi-darkness. In the moments when light did enter these spaces it illuminated the walls, where brown drip marks rolled down the concrete amidst mildew. In desperation, his family would press flour into those drips to make a dough. Aajyna is the Arabic Lebanese for dough.

Sabsabi processes works iteratively, where works and series oscillate back into focus in his practice. He is constantly revisiting and reimaging the work, capturing with each edition his shifts in perspective and evolving context. For Vessel Aajyna is presented for the first time outside of the Gallery context. In a small, disused space the work returns to the memory in the most haunting presentation yet. While the drips imprint the walls vertically the centre of space is occupied by a series of small speakers. They hum and vibrate in the space echoing the continuous rumble that accompanies existence in a zone of conflict.

We are looking for a new Venue Hire Coordinator!

Are you an excellent communicator, admin extraordinaire, friendly, organised and want a flexible part-time role?

The Naval Store is one of Fremantle’s key event and venue hire spaces. A unique heritage building at the entrance to Fremantle, there is plenty of opportunity to build our business and profile within the events industry. Venue hire is a core business activity at the Naval Store and we’re seeking a motivated Venue Hire Coordinator to join us.
The ideal candidate will live locally, be flexible with work hours, and have experience working in events/bookings. Primarily this role is to help us build our revenue stream from external venue hire- connecting with community groups, facilitating private and public events, film and photo-shoots, market groups, weddings and corporate functions.

This person will continue working with external promoters, event organisers and clients; actively managing Naval Store venue hire bookings, calendars, invoicing and carry-out administrative tasks.

This is a part-time, 4-6 month role.

Responding to the site, ‘Between Suns’ unfolds as a multi-sensory journey through painting, video, sound, smell and installation. Anchored by Sabsabi’s first exhibited work Aajyna (1998), the exhibition traces a sustained inquiry into mysticism, the everyday, fate and coincidence - forces that quietly shape our experiences of life. This presentation of Aajyna is intimate in nature, an immersive experience that reflects on Sabsabi’s experience of the Lebanese Civil War as a child.

Working across painting, video, sound, installation and performance, Khaled approaches art as a communicative and ethical space: a shared language through which complex ideas of belonging, faith, power and collectively can be encountered. His work extends this inquiry, creating a tactile space for reflection on identity, spirituality, and the interrelatedness of daily life. Unfolding across cycles rather than fixed narratives, and inviting audiences into moments of reflection, resonance and exchange.

Vessel Contemporary is an independent, not-for-profit contemporary arts organisation based at the Naval Store in Fremantle. This exhibition reflects the organisation’s core commitment to presenting thought-provoking contemporary art as a space for dialogue.

Another fantastic project that was shot at the Naval Store!!!

‘Clockwork Films WA, in collaboration with Anthologie, recently had the pleasure of working with Bus Stop Films on YDAN’s latest spot, ‘Deal With It’. The approach to the work brought inclusion into the production process in a meaningful, hands-on way. Here we get a closer look at how the set came together.’
