I’m so incredibly thankful that the next amp rack I’m working on has an empty slot, working with raw ABS is so much nicer than wrestling with steel rack plates that already have the I/O embedded.

It will be a sad day indeed if I ever need to populate that slot 🤣

I have learned, that if you need to custom modify anything to install fans into it, especially where you need to cut, and to install mounting holes, you should absolutely install the fans to completion before doing anything else...

My full custom port I/O, top end amp rack with crossover and amplifiers for the 4 compression drivers, mounted fans with PWM control, to keep the passively cooled amps inside safe...

Features Stereo input from drive rack, and Stereo output to Mid-High amp rack.

Output to speakers with two Neutrik SpeakOn Terminals, each connector taking 2 pairs of audio to the passive top horn boxes.

Just a few screws to go in.

This amp rack is fully completed.

What an awful lot of work to have my rear I/O on the front. 🫨

Next for this flight case: Custom 32A power delivery system with SPD out to triple 10a RCBO breakers for lower power Class A\B amps, and private stage power drop.

The goal: Have absolutely zero vacant power plugs available for greedy power gremlins to cause overload trips with, and eliminate the need for dizzy boxes (which careless grenlins also love to steal power from) Just two 32A lines straight from the generator.

The secondary 32A PDU will reside in the soon to be assembled large Class D amplifier flight case, to handle their max power handling.

Panel-Mount XLRs Built to Survive Reality

Most XLR failures don’t happen at the connector.
They happen behind it — where strain, vibration, and bad strain relief slowly murder the conductors.

This build eliminates that failure mode.

What This Is

A hand-engineered, multi-layer strain-relief system for panel-mount XLR connections, designed to permanently transfer mechanical load away from solder joints and into the connector body itself.

Not heatshrink-for-show.
Not tape-as-a-crutch.
Actual load-path engineering.

How It’s Built

Each assembly follows a controlled, repeatable process:
1. Precision soldering — clean joints, zero mechanical load
2. Individual terminal heatshrink — insulation + conductor support
3. Secondary heatshrink bundling — internal strain distribution
4. Progressive outer heatshrink layers — stiffness gradient, not a hard hinge
5. 3M cloth gaffer interface — vibration damping + surface bonding
6. Final resin-lined encapsulation — bonded to the XLR barrel, not the wires

Result:
A flexible, compliant core with a bonded structural shell — the same principle used in molded industrial cable boots.

One rack built, four to go, just need to plug up the IEC13’s in.. oh, and install some fans and blanking plates. 💁‍♀️

Arkangel audio has moved to a new location and to celebrate so am breathing life into my Old Mac Pro, literally by cleaning it, more than just a little bit of dust…

If you are lazy like me you can put all your system fans and heat sinks in the dishwasher, I also did my keyboard 😂
