Adelaide’s pedigree for hosting world-class motorsport is unrivalled in Australia.
Today, the South Australian capital hosts Austarlia’s largest domestic motorsport event - the Superloop Adelaide 500 - widely regarded as one of the top touring car races in the world.
But cars have been tearing up the tarmac in Adelaide for decades.
Formula One heritage
From 1985-1995, Adelaide was the home of the FIA Formula One World Championship’s Australian Grand Prix, and saw memorable moments like Nigel Mansell’s tyre-blowing loss of the championship in 1986, Thierry Boutsen’s rain-soaked win in 1989, the 14-lap event won by the legendary Ayrton Senna in the monsoonal 1991 race, and classic clashes between Mansell and Senna (in 1992) and the championship-deciding collision between Damon Hill and a young Michael Schumacher in 1994.
Supercars
After a three-year hiatus, pro motorsport returned to Adelaide in 1999 with the Sensational Adelaide 500 pitting the nation’s favourite four-door sedans - the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon - against one another.
A single 500km race was split across two days, where Craig Lowndes recovered from a day 1 back-of-grid penalty to surge to victory in the opening race.
Since then many champions of Australian motorsport have cut their teeth in the traditional season opener. Series champions like Jamie Whincup (four wins), Shane Van Gisbergen (three wins), Marcos Ambrose, Mark Skaife, James Courtney (two wins) and Rick Kelly (one win) have all claimed honours on the streets of Adelaide.
A Festival of Adrenalin
The Superloop Adelaide 500 doesn’t just provide great on-track excitement - it’s a four-day festival with headline concerts, off-track excitement and right amid the party atmosphere of ‘Mad March’ in Adelaide.
In 2019, the supercharged closing-night concert will be headlined by American superband the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
