From airplane to high-seas, the journey can be a bit daunting because you're uncertain about what your next contract will entail. You're about to meet a whole new breed of people you need to get accustomed to again. The journey can be quite unsettling as you ask yourself, "Hmm, so what is my Manager like, what about my cabin mate,,, hmmm and the workmates?" This makes you feel uneasy because you know how these people can either bring the worst or best out of your contract. You get on the ship, introduced to your cabin mate, later on meet with your Manager, workmates and there WORK starts. You experience a roller coaster of emotions managing your work, homesick, oh did I mention jet lag 😫🙌.
The environment is fast-paced, everything moves very fast in the blink of an eye. Before you know it, you meet a friend, get along so well and a month later they sign off to never meet again for the next 4 contracts. Hmmm no one prepared us for the emotions we go through each time someone very close signs off. On another note, you are excited they are getting much-needed rest considering the long contract of hard work and you are left alone to finish your race as your turn shall come too.
Some find solace in the crew bar/lounge as they sip on their favorite cocktail, some do gym, some go for thermal night at the Spa and then there is me who find solace in the latter and going on the Open Deck where I watch the stars, the moon (cause someone close to me calls me Moonlight) and listen to the sound of many waters as the ship moves. Its a journey of making and missing targets, celebrating the small wins and counting your losses but not dwell much on them. Before you know it 5, 6 months have passed and you get ready to get back home, be united with family and start all over again.
