CHIEF MOONZE RECEIVES THUNDEROUS WELCOME AT GONDE

Earlier today, His Royal Highness Chief Moonze successfully undertook his symbolic pilgrimage from his Palace to the sacred Gonde site, marking the official commencement of the Lwiindi Gonde Traditional Ceremony scheduled for Monday, 7th July 2025.

Upon arrival, the traditional leader was met with a thunderous and heartfelt welcome by hundreds of jubilant community members, traditional dancers, business representatives and invited guests who lined the route to celebrate this culturally significant moment.

Leading the welcome was the Baleya clan—custodians of the Gonde shrine—who performed traditional rites in honour of the Chief’s arrival. The event also drew the presence of several esteemed traditional leaders from across the country, including Chief P**a of Luapula Province and others who joined in solidarity to show respect and unity.

This revered pilgrimage by Chief Moonze is a cornerstone of the Lwiindi Gonde Ceremony, a thanksgiving tradition by the Tonga-speaking people of Southern Province, during which ancestral spirits are honoured and blessings for rain and harvest are sought.

The ceremony is expected to draw thousands of local and international visitors in celebration of Tonga heritage, unity and cultural pride.

ALL SET FOR THE LWIINDI GONDE TRADITIONAL CEREMONY – STATEMENT BY THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON

As Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for the Gonde Lwiindi Traditional Ceremony, I am pleased to announce that we are fully prepared for this year’s ceremony, which begins tomorrow, 5th July, and runs through to 8th July 2025.

All logistical and security arrangements have been finalized and the Gonde arena in Chief Moonze’s area in Monze District is ready to receive our local and international guests.

Multitudes of people have already started arriving from across Zambia and beyond and we are excited to welcome everyone to this important cultural event. The stage is set, traditional protocols are in place and our performers are ready to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Tonga-speaking people.

This year’s ceremony is being held under the theme “Unity in Diversity and Prosperity”, a timely reminder of the values that unite us as a people and as a nation.

We are also honoured that His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema is expected to grace the ceremony on Monday, 7th July 2025 alongside other distinguished guests, traditional leaders and dignitaries.

I wish to take this opportunity to invite everyone to attend and celebrate with us—peacefully, respectfully and in the spirit of unity. This is not just a cultural gathering but a time of thanksgiving, reflection and national pride.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I extend sincere gratitude to all our cooperating partners, traditional leaders, government departments and members of the public who are contributing to make this ceremony possible.
