The Rabbit and the Hyena

Long ago when animals still spoke the language of people and the moon listened carefully to every word there lived a clever Rabbit and a greedy Hyena in the same land.

Rabbit was small and soft spoken but his mind was sharp like a thorn. Hyena was strong loud and proud with a laugh that shook the night. Because of his strength Hyena believed the world belonged to him and that smaller creatures existed only to serve him.

One dry season food became scarce. The grass turned pale the rivers shrank and hunger walked freely across the plains. Hyena decided that Rabbit would become his helper and his meal whenever he wished.

“Rabbit” Hyena said one morning “you are clever but weak. From today you will find food for me. If you fail I will eat you.”

Rabbit bowed low and smiled gently. “Great Hyena” he said “I will gladly serve you. But there is a secret garden near the river where food grows even in drought. Only the wisest animals may enter.”

Hyena’s ears stood tall. “Take me there at once.”

Rabbit led Hyena through bushes and stones until they reached a narrow pit covered with dry grass.

“This is the entrance” Rabbit said. “But only one animal may enter at a time. You must jump in bravely.”

Hyena laughed his loud laugh and leapt into the pit. The grass fell away and Hyena landed hard unable to climb out.

Rabbit peered down and spoke calmly. “Hyena you wanted to eat me because you were strong. But strength without wisdom is like teeth without food.”

Hyena begged and promised never to trouble Rabbit again. Rabbit listened then gathered other animals who helped Hyena out after many hours.

From that day Hyena learned to respect the small and the quiet. Rabbit continued to live by his wit and the animals remembered the lesson.

That is why to this day Rabbit runs freely and Hyena laughs loudly but always looks over his shoulder.

And the elders say wisdom feeds longer than strength.

The Drum That Remembered the River

Long before roads stitched the land together when the stars still leaned close enough to listen there lay a village beside a great river. The people said the river had a voice and that it spoke most clearly to children and to elders who had learned how to be quiet.

In that village lived a young boy named Chanda whose hands were always busy and whose ears were always open. He listened to the wind brushing the reeds to the frogs counting the night and to the river as it breathed against the banks. Chanda’s grandmother Nasilele was the keeper of stories. She said that every sound had a memory and every memory had a sound.

One season the rains failed. The river thinned and the fields cracked like old pottery. Fish disappeared and the drums in the village fell silent because people had no strength for dancing. Fear crept into the huts like cold smoke.

One evening as Chanda sat beneath an ancient baobab tree he heard a rhythm beneath the hush of the river soft patient and old. Digging where the sound was strongest he uncovered a small drum wrapped in river grass and clay. When he struck it gently the river answered with a low hum.

Chanda carried the drum to Nasilele. Her eyes widened and she bowed her head. “This is the Ng’oma wa Mulonga” she said “the Drum That Remembered the River. Our ancestors played it when the people forgot how to listen.”

That night the village gathered by the water. Chanda played as the grandmother sang the oldest song she knew a song without words. The rhythm did not demand the rain. It thanked the river for all it had ever given. The people joined in clapping softly not to be loud but to be true.

Before dawn clouds rose like dark cattle from the horizon. Rain fell first shyly then with joy. The river swelled fields drank deeply and fish returned silver and quick.

When the sun rose the drum had vanished. Only damp earth remained beneath the baobab. Nasilele smiled. “It has gone back to remembering” she said.

From that day on the village taught its children not only how to speak but how to listen. And when the river murmured at night Chanda would smile knowing that some stories are not told with words but with respect.

And that is why even now when the river is pleased it sings.
