Originally, in the late 1800's, our historic Waterfall Stone Barn was the station goods shed in the small hamlet of Van Reenen, twelve kilometres away from its location. Demolishing and relocating it soon after the Anglo Boer war was a mammoth task as there were no proper roads and it all had to be transported by ox wagon over rough terrain to the farm. Here it was reassembled on exactly the same footprint with each stone in place in order to provide a substantial farm building where cows could be milked and sheep shearing could take place. More recently, with a change in emphasis to beef farming, we began using it to celebrate special occasions, big birthdays, shoot parties and particularly the farm centenary festivities. That was until James, our oldest son and his fiancée Kelly, decided to have their own wedding here on the farm. This was the catalyst needed to upgrade and renovate the barn with a vision to make it a truly unique location for a larger function and a very special weekend party retreat.
Surrounded by spectacular scenery the iconic waterfall, after which the farm takes its name, and the peace of rolling countryside, the Waterfall Barn offers a very different experience from that of a city gathering. By virtue of being equidistant from Johannesburg and Durban, a function here lends itself to a weekend of revelry rather than a quick visit. With that in mind, we have also restored the original stone farmhouse to offer a quaint and charming retreat for the wedding party. However, we are also fortunate to offer a range of excellent local lodgings in very close proximity. Our neighbours at Oaklands Country Manor have won countless awards for being one of the top small hotels in the country and are famous for sumptuous food and comfort. The renowned Green Lantern Inn in Van Reenen, Oban Guest Farm, Strawcroft Cottage and the Riverview Inn in Swinburne complete the choice and with over 220 beds close by it makes a weekend occasion not only possible but preferable.
