WHAT IS AN ADVANCE IN A RECORD LABEL? 🎵
An advance is money a record label pays an artist upfront before the music starts generating royalties.
But here’s the part every artist should understand:
An advance is usually recoupable.
For example, a label gives an artist R20,000 as an advance. If the artist’s music later generates royalties, the label may recover that R20,000 from those earnings before the artist starts receiving additional royalty payments.
An advance is not always “free money.” Read the contract and understand exactly how it will be recovered, what expenses are included, and how royalties will be calculated.
Artists: understand the deal before you sign it.
