For many people, this appears in the lawn every spring and gets treated as a problem.

To pollinators, it is one of the first reliable food sources of the year.

White clover blooms low to the ground and flowers for weeks. At a time when trees have not opened and garden plants are still dormant, its nectar feeds native bees emerging from winter with almost no alternatives available.

It also quietly improves the soil. Clover roots host bacteria that add nitrogen back into the ground, which is why areas with clover stay greener during dry periods.

When lawns are sprayed early in the season, the flowers disappear just as bees begin searching for food. Leaving small patches changes very little visually, but it changes survival for insects using suburban areas as habitat.

Sometimes what looks unfinished in a yard is simply a small ecosystem at work.

If trees could give us Wi-Fi, we would surely plant them nonstop. In a world increasingly obsessed with technology, we often forget the simple, invaluable gifts that nature provides. Trees offer more than just beauty—they give us oxygen, shade, and a sense of peace.

As gardeners, we know the importance of trees in our green spaces. Not only do they provide shelter for wildlife and cooling shade during the summer months, but they also help absorb carbon dioxide and clean the air. Trees are essential for our physical and mental well-being, yet they often go underappreciated.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on how much we rely on trees and nature in our everyday lives. The next time we plant a tree, let’s remember how much we gain from it—not just Wi-Fi, but the pure, simple act of breathing fresh air. 🌳💚

Certain garden plants naturally attract the small insects that dragonflies hunt, and many also make great perching spots. Dragonflies are often seen resting on the tall flower stalks of plants like crocosmia, gladiolus, hosta, yarrow, bearded irises, and hybrid daylilies. You can also add bamboo sticks or other garden stakes to give them more landing spots. On cooler days, dragonflies like to warm themselves by sitting on large rocks or sunlit flagstones.

Dragonflies are incredibly helpful in the garden. They feed on mosquitoes, flies, midges, and other small insects—some can eat more than 100 mosquitoes in a single day. Their aquatic young (called nymphs) also prey on mosquito larvae in freshwater. Because dragonflies rely on clean water and healthy habitats, their presence is a strong sign that your garden and nearby ecosystem are in good condition.
