“Echoes of Faith and Love” weaves a musical journey across centuries, guided by the expressive blend of baritone voice, cello, and piano. The program opens with the spiritual clarity and devotion of Bach’s sacred music, where purity of line and timeless reverence set the tone. From there, we step into the intimate world of Elizabethan songs, exploring the tenderness, wit, and yearning of early English love poetry. The program concludes in the rich emotional soundscape of French mélodie, where deep reflection and refined passion unfold in luminous color.

Together, these works trace the human spirit’s search for solace, connection, and beauty—echoes of faith and love that resonate across time.

Join Christon and Blaine as they leap centuries in a single breath — from Purcell’s powdered wigs to Chappell Roan’s glitter, with pit stops in opera gossip, musical-theatre heartbreak, and the occasional existential crisis masked as a love song.

It’s a concert where Baroque meets Broadway, where art song flirts shamelessly with pop, and where two q***r performers rewrite the idea of a “duet” on their own terms. Expect high notes, low notes, questionable life choices set to beautiful music, and a whole lot of heart.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a soprano and a tenor travel through time armed only with vibrato and emotional baggage… this is your show.

Come for the music. Stay for the chaos, the camp, and the chemistry.

Enjoy a phenomenal jazz performance with the setting sun in the beauty of the Johnman Gardens this Friday evening.

The Katemba Trio invites you to experience conversations through music – a dynamic exchange where rhythm, harmony, and improvisation speak louder than words. The trio unites three remarkable voices with different backgrounds that come together, each bringing their own perspective. Blake Hellaby, a virtuous pianist, composer, and producer, sets the tone for dialogue with his expressive touch and rhythmic sensitivity. Schalk Joubert, award-winning bassist and composer, adds depth and character to the conversation with his blend of West African grooves. Bringing his international jazz experience into the trio, Pascal Haas, drummer, educator, and arranger, rounds up the conversation with his sensitive drumming style and versatile skillset. You can expect original compositions that build a basis for an ever-evolving musical conversation – spontaneous, heartfelt, and deeply rooted in connection. Join us for an evening where melodies meet stories, rhythms spark responses, and music becomes a language of its own.

Come early to enjoy a walk through the gardens. Doors open at 18:30.

Johnman Concerts hosts Mikael von Eschwege for a violin and piano showcase recital.

Introduction from the artist:

"My name is Mikael von Eschwege, and I am a classical music aficionado and hobbyist. I am studying Data Engineering, third year, with violin as a practical extra module under the tutelage of Dr Suzanne Martens, I received private piano lessons from Mr José Dias for the first year-and-a-half of my studies, and I also play viola and organ when time permits. I competed in the Unisa Music Scholarship Competition in my matric year in 2022 on both piano and violin and won the second prize for piano. I also progressed to the third round of the Hennie Joubert Piano Competition in 2024, I was the concertmaster of the Cape Town Youth Orchestra for the first semester of 2025, and I coached the Dagbreek Acapella group in 2025.

I chose the repertoire of this concert based on a simple rule: whether I really really like the piece or not. After a few months of practicing the repertoire for my own enjoyment, I thought it a shame that I should play these fantastic pieces only in an isolated practice room, and decided to share them in my first solo concert. A concert program is often chosen based on a general musical theme, or the musical fit and style of the different pieces, but rarely purely reflects the selfish enthusiasm of the performer. I hope that I can share some of this enthusiasm with you!"

Rafferty Shea, from Los Angeles, California, is a singer-songwriter whose music blends classic storytelling with a modern rock edge. Heavily inspired by the greats such as The Beatles and The Stones, Rafferty’s lyrical approach has its own unique edge and swagger. His songs, including “Young Goodman Browne”, “New York’s For Sale”, and “Three Clover Leaves”, touch on themes of love, politics, and peace. With a guitar in hand, Rafferty Shea is ready to Roll N Roll.

Joshua Browne, out of Cape Town, South Africa is a singer-songwriter and producer. His head is full of the broadest range of taste, from Springsteen to Bon Iver. What really gets Joshua going is singing over his beloved acoustic guitar in the corner of his room to on stage in front of your eyes. His lyrics are riddled with themes of hope and love, making specific mention of songs “Hope Chords”, “Dance Like Lovers”, and his debut single “Clouds Gone Deaf”. Joshua Browne is a force to watch for music coming out of South Africa.

Join us this Friday for a stunning concert of flute and piano!

Marlene and Luisa will be exploring two beautiful, very different sonatas. The first, Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op.64 (1904) by the female composer Mel Bonis is a stunning romantic-impressionistic work. The piece is full of colour and a luminous atmosphere which really reminds of the impressionistic style. Mel Bonis was a student of composer Cezar Franck, who encouraged her compositions and supported her admission to the Paris Conservatoire where she studied alongside composer Claude Debussy.

The second work, Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Op.94 (1943) (also later adapted for violin) by Sergei Prokofiev is more well known. It was written at the start of World War 2 and is an example of his signature style where he often switches between moods. It is an exciting piece that could suit the Halloween mood!

Louisa Theart is a flautist from Cape Town who was appointed sub-principal flute in the Cape Town Philharmonic in 2022. She holds an MMus from the Royal College of Music and also studied at UCT. She frequently performs at various festivals and is an innovative musician who likes to collaborate in order to push the boundaries of the traditional concert experience such as her collaboration with Matthijs van Dijk and Lucy Strauss to create Photoplay, a production where silent films are screened with live performances.

Marlene Vlok is a pianist from Cape Town who recently won second prize at the prestigious Johann Vos National Music Competition. Marlene completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Piano Performance under Dr. Esthea Kruger (UCT) in 2024. And is an avid performer of chamber music and solo recitals, she also recently performed at the Klein Karoo Klassique where she met Louisa and where the idea of this program started.
