Profile of your Agriculture and Agro - Processing Nominee: Welile Bridgete Gumede
Welile Bridgete Gumede is a resilient agribusiness entrepreneur and Director of Azowel Projects, a 100% Black female-owned agricultural enterprise focused on commercial farming, agro-processing and inclusive economic development.
With a multidisciplinary background spanning healthcare, chemical engineering, agribusiness and entrepreneurship, she combines technical expertise with a strong commercial and social-impact vision.
Since establishing Azowel Projects in 2017, Welile has grown the business into a commercial hydroponic farming operation producing vegetables including peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach and celery for formal and wholesale markets.
Her entrepreneurial journey has been marked by remarkable resilience, particularly after the 2022 floods and civil unrest forced her to rebuild and relocate operations.
Despite these setbacks, she restored production, protected employment and continued expanding the business.
Welile is also developing NutriVuna, a value-added food brand aimed at transforming locally grown produce into affordable, nutritious products while reducing food waste and creating additional markets for farmers.
Her long-term vision includes an integrated agricultural and agro-processing ecosystem that strengthens food security and rural economies.
Her achievements include winning the Standard Bank Top Women EmpowHER Durban Regional Pitching Den, the SA Future Trust Women in Business Award and the Illovo Sugar Tiller 10 Programme, while also earning recognition in the Food Lover's Market Seeds of Change Programme.
Beyond business, Welile mentors emerging entrepreneurs and farmers, promotes opportunities for women and youth, and champions sustainable, technology-driven agriculture.
Her leadership demonstrates resilience, innovation and a deep commitment to inclusive economic growth.
