Hey kids, gather around here. It is story time:
It was back in 2002 and we were starting the 4th quarter of the year and Lew Potgieter from Universal Music brought me an advance copy of this album and I started listening to it in Paulβs office. I was head over heels after two songs and I wanted to order as many copies as the budget could allow. I was working for the biggest music retailer in Africa but we were under a watchful eye of Clicks music division. Unfortunately we needed to spend an βxβ amount with Universal that last quarter of the year and my Floetry dream was kind of shattered.
I then turned to my number 1 music and DVD importer, Sergio (who later became my boss) and placed an order for about 25 units. I called my right hand man Floyd who was based in Cape Town at that time and we listened to Floetry in his car and we loved it. Heβs the dude that got me into so much dope music.
When Sergio dropped the shipment that contained Floetry, I was called to the big bossβ office and was told not to go crazy when I order imports. Import CDs were going for about R250 retail at that time. I told everyone in that room that I was going to sell all 25 copies in one day and they all laughed, except for Paul who had my back like spine.
This is where the name dropping starts, brace yourselves. I called Brian (Floydβs cousin and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper at that time) he then came with Mendu (I could be wrong but hey, this is my story). He bought more than one copy. I then walked next door to one of my friends, Mr Ignatius Moβ¦aka Iggy Smallz. He went crazy about it and I called DJ Monde as well. Bondo Ntuli probably came by a week later looking for it but he was late as per usual and now we know why YFM gave him a Sunday show πππ
All I know is that 25 copies of Floety were sold in that one day and my bosses were disappointed with my feat. I still have a bone to pick with them. Universal heard about it and they told my bosses that I am not allowed to bring a product that is now licensed for SA region distribution. They were lying because they never knew how big these girls were going to be.Moving forward with this story, Floetic was launched in South Africa.
