The Life of a Videographer:
(By Dolla Dawlene)
Let me tell you a story about a videographer. Probably one of the best - Dirkie Lochner (Not just because he’s the love of my life, but because I fell for him before I even knew his name—just by the way his passion for capturing moments shone through him like a light.)
He has spent most of his life behind the lens. Learning. Creating. Perfecting his craft. Some days are short shoots, some stretch into sleepless weeks. One day he’s in town, the next he’s miles away, chasing the perfect shot. He has seen things, experienced things—life through a lens, a story in every frame.
A videographer isn’t just someone who presses record. He’s the eyes of a memory, the keeper of time, the artist who turns reality into a masterpiece. "A camera is like a time machine, and a videographer? The one who decides which moments are worth reliving forever."
But this life isn’t always glamorous. He has lost a lot—gear, clients, and sometimes even faith. There were moments of doubt, dark days of wondering how to provide, thinking, Maybe I need a 'real' job. Because freelancing? It’s not for the weak. It’s a world of uncertainty, a life where one month is full of opportunity, and the next is a silent phone.
Yet, he never gave up. He stood his ground. Built his reputation. Found his way back, over and over again. Because videography isn’t just what he does—it’s who he is.
Now, he’s a father to a sweet little boy, who, just like his dad, is already fascinated by screens, by movement, by the magic of capturing life. "Like father, like son—both always watching, always creating, always seeing the world differently."
He never complains about the late nights, the long hours, or the exhaustion. He never says no to an opportunity. He will travel days away from his family to do his job because that is his calling.
"The life of a videographer is a paradox—sleepless nights to capture dreamlike moments, exhaustion for the sake of creating something unforgettable."
One day, his little boy will tell stories about his dad—the man who didn’t just hold a camera but held people’s memories in his hands.
People may not always understand him, but behind the camera, he sees the world in ways they never will. He turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.
From camera operator to jib operator, PTZ controller to director, editor to storyteller—he has grown. Not just in his career, but as a father, a leader, a professional.
So, here’s to the videographers. The unseen, the unthanked, the ones who press record so that life never fades.
And to the one I love—keep creating, keep chasing the story, keep making magic. Because the world needs more dreamers like you.
