If you entered into a customary marriage but the marriage was never registered with the Department of Home Affairs, please take urgent note.

The current special registration period for qualifying customary marriages that were not registered within the prescribed period ends on:

ONLY A FEW DAYS REMAIN.

If you believe this may apply to you, contact or visit your nearest Department of Home Affairs office AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and ask about the registration process and supporting documents required in your particular circumstances.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY.

Having had a traditional wedding does not, by itself, tell you whether you are legally married or which marriage law applies.

What actually took place during your traditional/customary process may be legally important.

NO HOME AFFAIRS CERTIFICATE DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN NO MARRIAGE.

A valid customary marriage may already exist even if it was never registered.
