Sometimes the Greatest Value of Sport Is Simply Feeling Like You Belong

One of the most powerful things about lawn bowls and bocce is that they can give people more than competition.

They can give people friendship. Routine. Confidence. A place to show up and feel part of something. For many people, especially those living with disability, mobility challenges, or simply navigating life a little differently, that feeling matters deeply. It is not always about winning the end or getting closest to the jack or pallino. Sometimes it is about being welcomed, being included, and feeling useful, valued, and part of a team. That kind of feeling stays with people long after the game is over.

That is why these sports deserve more appreciation. They are not just quiet precision games. At their best, they are communities. And when a club culture is supportive, helpful, and open, it reminds us that accessibility and belonging are not side issues. They are part of what makes the sport worth loving in the first place. The best version of the game is the one where more people feel they truly have a place in it.
