Some legacies aren't built, they're planted. 🌿

In 1905, Abraham van Velden was given a piece of Stellenbosch soil and a chance to build something that endures. He named the farm after his grandmother, Elizabeth Overgaauw, built a cellar four years later, and set something in motion that four generations of his family would carry forward.

Over a century on, the Van Velden family are still farming that same land and the firsts they've chalked up along the way have quietly shaped South Africa's entire wine industry:

✦ First SA estate to plant Portuguese Port cultivars
✦ First Bordeaux blend in SA Tria Corda, 1979
✦ First single-varietal Merlot bottled in SA, 1982
✦ South Africa's only producer of Sylvaner
✦ Founder member of the Stellenbosch Wine Route & Cape Winemakers Guild

Fourth-generation winemaker David van Velden grew up in that cellar, literally. By age five, his father had given up trying to keep him out. For David, it’s not just heritage, it’s home.
Overgaauw is perhaps best known for its pioneering role in South African Merlot production.

At a time when the variety was still relatively uncommon in the Cape, the estate recognised its potential and helped establish Merlot as one of South Africa's most celebrated red wine cultivars.

The vineyards benefit from Stellenbosch's renowned terroir, where warm days, cooling maritime influences, and carefully managed vineyard practices contribute to wines of depth, structure, and balance. Whether white, red, or fortified, every bottle reflects the estate's commitment to quality and authenticity.

This Friday and Saturday evening at The Tank Room, guests can explore a selection that showcases both the diversity and heritage of Overgaauw's portfolio. From crisp whites to richly layered reds and a beautifully crafted Cape Vintage, this promises to be a tasting filled with character and tradition.
