LOCKDOWN LEVEL 3 UPDATE:
The introduction of Level 3 lockdown has granted a great deal of relief in terms of greater freedom to exercise and the opening up of more industries. We encourage the cycling community to remain mindful that we are in the midst of a pandemic and need to continue to work together to enable government to open up the broader sports industry as soon as possible.
We remind you that exercise is currently permitted between the hours of 06h00 and 18h00 daily, provided that you do not cross districts or hotspot boundaries. We suggest that members cycle within their local areas as much as possible.
We continue to receive reports of cyclists not adhering to the regulations of making use of masks or other appropriate items to cover your nose and mouth while in public. Many cycling apparel companies manufacture masks that can be used while riding, or alternatively, the use of a buff will also suffice.
No mass participation events are permitted under alert Level 3 lockdown, however, we have a framework in place to start phasing in recreational events from alert Level 2 onwards, once given approval by government.
We have also received numerous complaints from trail managers of rogue riding on MTB trail networks throughout the country. Riding without the required permits jeopardises access to countless trails as it constitutes trespassing on private property. We encourage all MTB enthusiasts to support their local trail networks and ensure that you have a valid permit before entering these trails. Permits not only provide access to trails but also contribute to the maintenance and support of the trail builders network.
Lastly, the Dept. of Sports, Arts and Culture has published the gazette (No. 43434 dated 11 June 2020) in relation to the resumption of professional sporting activities. We are currently working with the BMX and Track discipline directors to apply these guidelines for the resumption of training at these facilities under alert Level 3 lockdown.
The gazetted regulations also allow for events catering to professional athletes to take place under strict requirements. Event organisers wishing to host events for professionals during Level 3 lockdown will need to submit all documentation to Cycling South Africa for approval before the submission can be sent to government.
