The very popular Hanepoot Brass Band will be playing in Montagu as part of the Tokkellaan Tour, taking in Swellendam, Barrydale annd Montagu over the weekend of 10-12 April.
The concert will take place on Sunday 12 April at 16h00 at The Toy Box, 8 Kohler Street.
Hanepoot Brass Band is a unique acoustic outfit playing goema, marabi and other South African jazz grooves. The 8-piece brass band comprised 6 horns, percussion and banjo, similar to that of the famous Brass Bands of New Orleans, but they uniquely perform the indigenous jazz styles of South Africa, with strong roots in Cape Jazz, and particularly the “goema”, the heartbeat of Cape Town’s own carnival bands.
Audiences love the acoustic sound and the rich South African repertoire, which includes original material as well as dedications to the work of some of our great composers past and present.
Hanepoot Brass Band was founded in 2019 by (Montagu resident!) trombonist, composer, arranger and bandleader Jannie “Hanepoot” van Tonder, who has a long pedigree in South African music, having worked with the likes of Johannes Kerkorrel, Nico Carstens, Vusi Mahlasela, The African Jazz Pioneers and everything inbetween.
Like the bandleader, the band is named after our indigenous sweet “Hanepoot” grape cultivar, found on every kitchen table in the Western Cape, and famous for the unique desert wine it produces.
Expect a passionate and colourful group of musicians playing tight arrangements, loose improvisations and everything in between.
Tickets are R150 and are available from Kupenda Africa, 6 Kohler Street. Tables are available for advanced booking. Kupenda Africa, also has a selection of wines and nachos, or get a picnic box from Die Stasie (both next door to The Toy Box).
The Tokkellaan Tour has been made possible by the support of the Barrydale Jazz and Brass Festival NPO (in partnership with Swellendam Municipality and Swellendam Musiekvereniging), as well as Montagu Cares NPO, who will receive a portion of ticket sales from the Montagu concert.
