What happened:
On 16 June 1976, thousands of Black high school students in Soweto, Johannesburg marched to protest the government’s decision to force Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. Police opened fire on the students.

The first student killed was 13-year-old Hector Pieterson. The photo of his body being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubo became an iconic image of the uprising.

Why it matters ?
1. The Soweto Uprising sparked nationwide resistance against apartheid. It showed the world the brutality of the regime.
