Fire on the mountain
On the 26th of December a huge fire started on the Paardeberg and was still burning on the 3rd of January. On the evening of the 27th, fueled by a strong southeaster, it came as a long line of flame down our mountain towards us. With no helicopter help possible in the dark, we were forced to evacuate. That meant our guests, all the animals and us. We drove away from the farm, thinking that the farm as we knew it was over. But miraculously, the wind suddenly stilled, and the fire stopped in its tracks. This was 100m from Sonkop cottage. Happily all is well now, though we had a bad scare.

Fynbos was in festive mood this weekend when 72 swing dancers came from all over the world to the farm for a swing dancing festival. They danced their hearts out, had a fabulous Saturday night party with a live jazz band and ate delicious meals from Lise Marie's kitchen. Happily they are back in March for a repeat event.

Staff and post graduate students of the mathematics department Stellenbosch university spent four days here on a workshop. They worked hard and also enjoyed free time on the farm.

The Stellenbosch SRC had a workshop here and friends (adults, children and 5 dogs) spent the weekend taking down black wattle and port jackson on the mountain. They cleared a considerable area and had lots of fun.

Wild things caught on the camera traps in the Paardeberg. Cape Leopard and, surprisingly, serval, amongst others. What a thrill to know these creatures have a home in the nature reserve.

Spring has arrived! The farm is a riot of colour.

Winnie the Hinny is now a youg adult. Here she is pictured with her donkey mother Talula and there is a picture of Stars, her horse father. Hinnies are very rare, unlike mules who have a donkey father and horse mother. Winnie is quite dominant amongst our 5 donkeys, but not as dominant as Stars who is king of the castle.

Last weekend we hosted an Iyengar yoga retreat run by Monique Woolls-King of Ayama Yoga. The group loved the space and the food.
