Sunday was a perfect day in the garden. We enjoyed a day in the garden with our dogs and cats and spent the whole day recording birds in the garden. No wind, pleasant temperature and humidity and crisp new growth with the fragrance of flowers travelling through the passages and garden rooms. Birdsong was crisp in the peaceful air. We recorded 51 species. It was a day of celebrating abundance and a home to many!

The house and garden is set against a steep hill in Knysna and 9 months old. The plants have settled in beautifully and ready to celebrate their first spring together to enlighten everyone in their presence.

The garden is located in town but feels like a setting in nature. The design considered existing planting and integrated new planting areas beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

Winter textures and colours in the garden enhances the architecture of this house. We designed and installed this garden a few years ago and the lovely clients appreciate the garden even more when they see wildlife like buck grazing in the garden. The house was designed by Merinda Brymer.

Set in a most beautiful natural landscape on the edge of a forested ravine with the Outeniqua mountains in the distance. The harmony appears when there is a conversation between manmade structure and natural landscape. Such an inspiration to design a garden surrounded by the wild. The structure is established and the eco pool is settling in. The surrounding soft landscaping is the next step that will embed the design into the landscape. Thank you six_kingdoms for the technical specs and installation of the pool and thank you to Shane from Rock Creations for the beautiful stone masonry.

The garden survived a severe drought up to Autumn this year. Spring and summer last year was exceptionally challenging. With no irrigation system we had to use water sparingly to keep the most affected plants alive with very low dam levels. In late autumn the rain came down. We had more than 400mm over a period of a month. The garden recovered beautifully and the two dams are full. The cycles of the seasons comes with times of deprivation and abundance where life responds accordingly and it is so noticeable in a garden. A garden is alive and our companion on the balancing journey of life. We don’t have to face it alone.

A garden we completed six months ago has experienced intense drought and heat in the first 2 to 3 months of its life and then the recent storm with severe wind and rain. Our maintenance team has been looking after it with care. My visit yesterday was welcomed by happy plants and a beautiful scene.

The bromeliad collection at Highacre Garden is radiating beauty in this rainy weather. I think it might be the hot humid conditions that like.
