Today we pause to honour the memory of our neighbour, Gertrude Ntuli. She was 87 years old.

For many years, she lived quietly opposite me. Many people noticed the state of her home. Far fewer took the time to notice the person who lived within it.

When I took the time to get to know Gertrude, I found someone entirely different from the assumptions people so easily make. She greeted me with a warm smile, genuine kindness and an unwavering positivity. She encouraged what we are trying to build at Frankly Oscar, never with complaint or suspicion but with grace and goodwill.

She inherited that property after the passing of the man she loved. She carried burdens that few people knew about and even fewer took the time to understand. Sadly, she spent much of her later life overlooked, misunderstood and, in many ways, the target of hostility.

Her passing has made me reflect on what community really means.

A community is not defined by beautiful homes, tidy lots or shared opinions. It is defined by compassion. By curiosity instead of judgement. By choosing to knock on a neighbour's door before forming an opinion about them. By recognising the humanity in people whose circumstances may be very different from our own.

May Gertrude rest in peace, and may her life remind us all to lead with kindness. We rarely know the battles another person fights or the reasons their story looks different from ours.

Strong communities are built not by the houses we live in but by the way we choose to treat the people who live beside us.
