You do not need to be an artist. You do not need a plan. You do not even need to know exactly what you are doing when you sit down. Sometimes all it takes is one ceramic piece, a paintbrush, and a little willingness to have fun with it.

And honestly, that is part of why people love it here. It is relaxed, playful, something different. You switch off for a bit, do something with your hands, and end up making something that is completely your own.

A little biltong. A little crunch. Something sweet. Something salty. One of those platters that starts with “just a few bites” and somehow ends with everyone reaching in for the last piece.

Yes, it is winter.

Yes, a milkshake still sounds like a very good idea.

Some treats do not wait for summer, and these are definitely on that list. Thick, colourful, unapologetically cheerful, and exactly the kind of thing that makes a normal outing feel a bit more fun.

Pair one with a painting session, order something good to eat, and you have the kind of table that works for date days, catch-ups, family outings, or just a little “we deserved this” moment in the middle of the week.

Some cravings do not need a committee meeting. They just need a table, a proper pizza, and enough time to enjoy it without rushing through the moment.

This is the kind of meal that makes winter feel a little easier. Warm, cheesy, satisfying, and very hard to share once you have claimed your slice. Add a painting session, good conversation, and a little time away from the usual routine, and suddenly the day looks a lot better.

Because honestly, if you are leaving the house in Joburg winter, the plan should at least involve food worth thinking about afterwards.

The first brushstroke that looks a little suspicious. The colour choice that gets questioned immediately. The moment you both realise this was a much better plan than just sitting somewhere scrolling between sips.

That is the fun of Clay Café Illovo.

There is just something about seeing the green and gold that brings people together. And with the Boks taking on Wales tomorrow, the timing feels right for a little South African spirit on the painting table too.
