Human Rights Day is commemorated in remembrance of the tragic events 65 years ago when police fired on a peaceful protest against the Pass laws in Sharpeville, resulting in the deaths of 69 people. This day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made in the struggle for democracy and the ongoing importance of human rights and social justice.
As we pay tribute to those who fought for our freedoms, it is important to reflect on our achievements in advancing and protecting human rights while also recognizing the areas that still need our attention.
We should also celebrate the many men in our society who actively advocate for human rights. These individuals, serving as social justice advocates in both public and private sectors, are deeply committed to improving the lives of our communities. Their contributions significantly influence South Africa’s cultural, political, and economic landscapes.
Tonight, the Mzansi Men of Influence Awards honored remarkable individuals such as Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, Rev. Chris Mathebula, Mr. David Molapo, Dr. John Kani, Dr. Dikgang Moseneke, Ntate Moloto, and many others for their outstanding contributions. I feel truly blessed to be counted among them.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Mzansi Men of Influence Awards, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture (DSAC), and everyone who came together to honor the legacy of men whose impact has shaped generations.
