In Memoriam, Khayakazi Madlala, 1994 – 2026
The Unisa Music Foundation notes with profound regret and heartache the passing of the distinguished South African soprano, Khayakazi Madlala. Born in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape Provice of South Africa, Khayakazi was educated at Gauteng Opera Academy and North West University. She was also a member of the Opera for Peace Academy and the Renée Fleming Song Studio. A singer of immense talent whose powerful voice and warm personality were inspirational to all who knew her. Khayakazi’s unforgettable performances at the 3rd Unisa National Voice Competition, and 7th Unisa International Voice Competition, earned her the plaudits of the juries and her peers alike. She won silver medals at both competitions, and her wonderful singing is recorded in a forthcoming documentary about the Unisa International Voice Competition. Khayakazi was an extraordinary musician and a beautiful person who will be sorely missed. We send our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones.
