Our bright Events star, Kayla >>> has something to say...

Right up until matric, I had no idea what I wanted to do.

Then one day, a friend's mum suggested hospitality. I discovered events were a big part of the degree and quickly realised I'd found my thing.

Today, I'm an Event Manager at HISIDE, and I love that no two days are the same.

One day I'm planning every detail behind a laptop. The next, I'm on site, meeting clients, solving problems, and watching months of planning come to life.

And I think that's what I love most: I don't just get to plan events. I get to experience them.

I'm also the youngest person on the HISIDE team, so I bring a slightly different perspective, fresh ideas, a different way of thinking, and probably a healthy amount of energy. 😄

But I'm also a little obsessed with the details.
Because an event can be delivered perfectly on paper and still not be memorable.

It's the small things that make the difference.

The things people weren't expecting. The things that make them think, “Wow, they really thought of everything.”

That's what I'm looking for.

When I'm not working...
You'll probably find me at the beach, walking my dogs, playing golf or spending time with family.

I love cooking, especially when there's someone to cook for, and I'm definitely the adventurous type. I like trying new things, seeing new places and getting out of my comfort zone.

I guess that's why events suit me so well:
New people. New places. New challenges. Never quite the same day twice.

So, there you have it.

I once had a client who only wanted to work with people who looked like him.

His team, his suppliers, everyone on the brief. It all had to match.

He wanted me to prove that everyone involved fit that picture before he’d sign on.

I told him, that’s not how we do things.

That’s not who we are.

We live in South Africa.

Eleven languages. So many cultures. So many different ways of seeing the world, doing business and getting things done.

And somehow, when we come together, it works.

That’s our HERITAGE.

That’s our STRENGTH.

I wasn’t going to build an events team around excluding any of it, no matter the size of the budget.

That’s the line for me.

Events are an opportunity to celebrate EVERYTHING we are. And it's an honor!

What makes an event feel unmistakably South African?

For me, it’s the way we find a reason to come together.

Last November, we took 200 guests to Zanzibar for an incentive trip.

There was an electoral shutdown. No signal across the island. And there was one thing our guests really didn’t want to miss: the Springboks.

So we found a way.

We got the game live-streamed onto a giant screen on the beach in front of the hotel.

As guests arrived after a long day of traveling, the screen came to life with the Springboks lining up for the national anthem.

People stopped in their tracks.

Within seconds, 200 tired travelers were standing together, singing along.

One guest turned to me and said:

“This is just so South African. I love it!”

I teared up. Because it was.

It was one of those moments where you think, this is what being South African is about.

That’s what LOCAL IS LEKA means to me.

Our makers. Our sounds. Our flavours. Our stories.

It’s a bit like a potjie, different ingredients, cultures and heritages coming together around one fire to create something richer, warmer and unmistakably South African.

And yes, I had to explain to the hotel that putting the rugby game on the agenda was non-negotiable.

“It’s not just rugby. It’s a religion.”
