More isn’t always better at an event.
Twenty years ago, if there was a gap on a dessert table, I wanted something in it. Different height, different colour, different shape. Odd numbers were compulsory. Empty space made me nervous. Quite frankly, if you could still see the tablecloth, I probably thought I hadn’t finished.
My mother’s generation had the right idea with “less is more”. Think of the little black dress. Simple enough that the necklace actually gets noticed.
Events can be the same. We assume more choice feels more generous: more desserts, more drinks, more stations, more décor. Then suddenly your guest is standing there looking like they’ve been handed a 400-page wine list, wondering whether the better option is three meters away.
Too much choice becomes hard work.
I notice it most with dessert tables. Why are there seventeen different things all shouting “pick me” like small children in a school play, when six really good choices would probably feel more luxurious?
Sometimes the smartest event question isn’t, “What else can we add?”
It’s, “What can we remove so the important thing has room to breathe?”
............Says the woman who still gets mildly anxious around an empty patch of tablecloth. 😂
