Oldie but a goodie.

Meal on a budget

Chicken and lentil curry served with roti (avg price of R180)

1 x 16 price braai pack (R110) breast removed for later dish - R85
4 medium potatoes - R7
1/2 cup lentils
250g frozen peas - R10 (Bought kg pack and weighed out)
Tumeric/borrie
curry powder
Onion
Garlic and ginger paste
3 TBS chutney

Roti
2 cups flour
4TBS melted butter more for after frying
1 cup boiling water
1 pinch salt

Curry
Prep cut all chicken into pieces, drumsticks kept whole
Peel potatoes - chop to your choice of size

Sautee onions until brown add garlic and ginger paste add little water to prevent burning.

Add curry powder and tumeric/borrie and cook out for 5 min adding water as you see fit. Add salt to taste and raw uncooked lentils. Cook for 5 minutes, add potatoes. Add water a cup or so. Coom potatoes until almost soft, add chicken bring to boil simmer on low for 5minutes. Add peas and chutney and switch off. Make sure you have enough liquid in the pot so that your curry does not burn.

Add optional coriander serve and enjoy.

Serves around 6

To stretch it further make 3 cups of rice instead of rotis and make a simple breyani

Would you believe this family dinner cost just R112.49 to make? 🤯

That's 4 generous portions for only R28.12 per person!

🛒 One Shop • Many Meals | Meal 2

Using ingredients from the same grocery shop from Checkers Sixty60, tonight's menu was a hearty Spaghetti Bolognese with vegetables.

✅ Leftover spaghetti from Sunday's shop
✅ Half a packet of mince
✅ One tomato purée
✅ One onion
✅ Half a bag of frozen mixed vegetables
✅ Pantry herbs, seasonings and cheese

The best part?

I still have the other half of the mince ready for another family meal later this week! 🌮

With food prices climbing every month, I'm challenging myself to make one grocery shop stretch as far as possible without sacrificing flavour or proper home-cooked meals.

🍗 Can you feed 8 people for under R300?

With food prices constantly going up, I wanted to see if I could put together a proper Sunday lunch without breaking the bank.

The challenge? Feed around 8 people for under R300.

Everything was ordered through Checkers Sixty60, and the total came to approximately R273 (excluding the milk and cheese, which I already had at home).

🍽️ On the menu:

🍗 Roast chicken
🥔 Roasted baby potatoes
🎃 Roasted butternut
🍠 Roasted sweet potatoes
🥦 Creamy broccoli & cauliflower bake
🍝 Spaghetti in a rich tomato sauce

To stretch the budget even further, I took advantage of the specials and only needed one packet of spaghetti and one tin of tomato paste from the promotion.

⏱️ Around 15 minutes of prep, then into the oven to do most of the work while I got on with my day.

The result? A hearty, home-cooked Sunday lunch that fed around 8 people for less than R300.
