Is the weather changing?

We recently joined our Spanish partners in Portugal to set up this incredibly beautiful, self-contained restaurant using our Stretchi sidewall system. Our side walls turned this large scale canopy into a functional dinning space. The side walls were mounted 2m above the ground and the tent was supported by 7m centre poles, making for an impressive setting.

We were just in time for the weather to start changing and the cooler European climate to take over.

Designed to keep the space protected, comfortable and usable whatever the season.

Some structures are placed on a site. This one was built around it.

Look up and the canopy opens where a tree kept growing. The fabric was cut, sealed, and tensioned around living oak, so nothing had to come down for the space to go up.

Below it, a restaurant that holds through the seasons. Deck underfoot, festoon light overhead, clear walls that keep the weather out and the view in. Pale sand-toned fabric that softens the daylight without ever going dark.

This is what a semi-permanent stretch tent does when it is made to stay. It settles into a place instead of covering it.

Some camps are flown in before a single guest arrives.

Open bush, a clearing, and a crew with poles and fabric. Out here there is no hard structure waiting. The camp is raised by hand, tent by tent, until shade and shelter stand where there was only veld. Botswana does the rest. Wide sky, dry grass, and a horizon that runs for miles.

A tented camp has to do two things at once. Sit lightly on the land, and hold through heat, wind, and the cold desert nights. Tensioned fabric does that. It leaves almost no trace when it comes down, and it earns its place while it stands. Crafted in Cape Town, raised in the Botswana bush.

Innovation starts by asking, “What if?”
Our latest project challenged the traditional sailcloth tent by creating something entirely new: a hybrid Sail Stretch Tent.
It captures the elegant, sculptured appearance of a classic sailcloth structure while delivering the versatility, flowing curves, and performance of stretch fabric. The result is a completely unique structure that combines the best characteristics of both designs.

Every prototype, pattern, and stitch was developed and manufactured by our team in Cape Town. It’s another example of how we continue to push the boundaries of tensile architecture through innovative design and manufacturing.

The tent did not go around the tree. It went with it.

Where another structure would have stopped, this one carries on. The fabric is cut, finished, and sealed to wrap a mature trunk, with a closure that holds the weather out and leaves the tree exactly where it stands. Stitched by hand in Cape Town.

Some of the rarest plants in the Cape spend winter under a Stretchi tent.

Babylonstoren is one of the best known w**e estates near Cape Town. A fixture on any Cape Winelands tour, a destination for South Africa w**e tasting, and home to a celebrated w**e farm restaurant. Its gardens hold rare species that needed shelter through the cold months, without losing the light they live on.
The brief was precise. Hold the cold out. Let the daylight through. Sit quietly in the landscape.

We built a custom structure in white PureFlex 7™️, 100% waterproof and UV-stable, shaped to the rock and the contours of the beds. The cold stays out. The light comes through, soft and diffused. The plants are held through the season, and the tent reads as part of the place rather than something set on top of it.

This is built-to-site work. Beyond weddings and w**e farms Cape Town events, into something that lives on the land through winter.
