I specialise in non-religious ceremonies but am happy to include religious elements to ensure that your ceremony reflects your values. I can facilitate the legal formalities under both the Marriage Act of 1961 and the Civil Union Act of 2006 which allows for both heteros*xual and same s*x couples to formalise their partnerships.

If you're curious what a marriage register looks like here are photos of the 2 kinds of register (DHA30 and DHA1766) and their respective certificates.

1. First page of Marriage register.
2. Second page of Marriage register.
3. Civil Union register.
4. Certificates

After your union is solemnised you will have both these documents (i.e. certificate plus register).

Your marriage / civil partnership certificate is issued on the day you sign the register. And you'll get one of the 3 copies of the register back once Home Affairs signs the receipt on the second page.

The certificate is an abridged one. If you need your marriage registered in another country you may need an unabridged certificate which only Home Affairs issues. If you apply for a UMC you'll need to attach a copy of your register.

Another kitchen ceremony carefully solemnised under lockdown. Gcobani and Thuli signed the deal on their marriage last week. They got married over a year ago under customary law but decided to switch to the Marriage Act and signed the paperwork in my kitchen. If you decide to be married under the Customary Marriage Act, remember you must still get a certificate within 3 months from Home Affairs. Most couples don’t know this, but it’s not the end of the world if you forget. You can switch to one of the other Acts any time: The Marriage Act of 1961 or the Civil Union Act of 2006. .................... .....………….......... ........................... #

Many couples don’t know that you don’t need a marriage officer at your wedding ceremony. A wedding ceremony is not a legal requirement and as such, anyone can conduct your wedding. Many couples are choosing to get their marriage or civil partnership solemnised by a marriage officer before their wedding or even instead of a wedding. I call these “kitchen ceremonies” because that’s where I do most of them 🙂 It’s no-frills but it’s still important and even sentimental. Functional but warm, just like a kitchen.
