In 1999 GAIZA learned marimba, he was taught by Andile Noyo from Gugulethu. In 1999 he
joined an African Arts project with his friend Thandekile in Khayelitsha after which GAIZA started his own group called Abikondela. In 2001 they were chosen to perform at the Imvelo African Restaurant at the V&A Waterfront to perform Marimba and traditional dancing. They were a team of seven artists and the opportunities came flooding in and the guys starting touring most of SA performing at various venues along the way. In 2001 the group signed a contract to assist Thandie Mandela, the grand daughter of Nelson Mandela as she was studying African music. They helped her learn and grow her skills within the African Arts. In 2002 GAIZA and his group had some amazing opportunities and performed with artists such as Judith Sephuma as well as the fantastic Mafikizolo! In 2003 the group began to perform much more within their community, they felt that the students in the various schools would benefit from learning the African Arts of our beautiful country. The guys have been interviewed on Morning Live, they also produced a song for a movie called 'Yesterday' in 2004. In 2009 Ithongolethu was formed and we signed with AfrodizzyActs to provide all of their African Acts for the various events that they do within South Africa and we have travelled far and wide through our beautiful country. They travel around the Western Cape offering musical worskshops in community centres such as Stellenbosch, Gugulethu, Houtbay and Khayelitsha. The Ithongolethu Group is led by Welile who stays in Gugulethu. The group consists of 17 members who come from different communities across Cape Town. The group offers Traditional Dancing, Marimba Bands, Gumboot Dancing, Pantsula Dancing and African Drumming. They have at least two rehearsals every week.
