Earlier this year, I visited Phezulu Safari Park in KZN, where the Gasa clan took us on a journey through rhythm, dance and rich Zulu culture.
It was a chance to reconnect with the place I call home. The hills, the sounds, the people and the many cultures that make KZN what it is and keeps me grounded, no matter where life takes me.
Before 24 September became our national Heritage Day, the date was observed as Shaka’s Day in KwaZulu Natal, honouring King Shaka. Today, it holds space for the many cultures of South Africa, while that history remains part of its meaning.
Looking back at these moments, I’m reminded of how much there is to learn and appreciate in the places we come from. For me, celebrating heritage means making time for that connection and listening to the people who carry these traditions forward.
If you’re in KZN, visit PheZulu in Botha’s Hill and experience the Gasa clan’s performance for yourself. There’s something special about coming home with a deeper appreciation of it.
