HOW TO LET GO OF A PET YOU LOVED

Stop waiting for the paws at the door. Stop listening for the bowl to rattle. If they were here, you would know. Put their things away when you are ready. Keep the collar if it steadies you. If that emptiness hurts, grieve that too. Grieve the part of you that was their person.

Forgive yourself for the last decisions. You chose with love. Delete the messages that reopen the night. Stop searching the vet notes for a better ending. You did your best. They trusted you. Let that be your closure.

Cry when you need to. Say their name out loud. Hold the blanket. You are not weak for hurting. You are human. Do not confuse missing them with needing a replacement. Missing means they mattered.

Remember the mornings you were welcomed like the whole sky. The walks that kept you moving. The quiet company that made rooms feel bigger. Stop scrolling rescue pages tonight. The shape they left cannot be filled by speed. Choose rest.

Let the house be quiet. Do not rush to fill it. Tell your friends the small stories. The silly ones too. You do not need permission to grieve a pet. A small life can still be a whole universe.

Write them a letter. Make a box for tags and photos. Plant something. Donate the food when you can. Healing is not tidy. Let the waves come and go.

Fall apart if you must. Then rebuild. Day by day. You were whole before them. You are changed, not broken. When you are ready, love again in a new shape.
