🎻 Saturday Strings at Da Capo Academy 🎻

After an amazingly successful first half term with our pilot group, we're pleased to be offering places to a NEW INTAKE for the summer term! If your child is interested in taking part, please contact us by Monday 20th April.

Saturday Strings is a free Saturday morning programme for children in Years 4–6, introducing bowed string instruments:

🎻 Violin
🎻 Viola
🎻 Cello

No previous musical experience is needed, and instruments are provided.

Children will enjoy:
• Structured, supportive beginner sessions
• Learning in small groups and as an ensemble
• Making new friends from different schools
• A positive, team-based musical experience

We have a limited number of spaces, so interested families will need to contact us by Monday 20th April at the very latest in order for young people to start lessons in the summer. Applications received after 20th April will be considered for a third cohort in September.

Young Musicians Strike the Right Note in Just Half a Term

A new Saturday music programme for primary-aged children in Jersey is already showing strong early progress after just a few weeks.

Da Capo Academy’s Saturday Strings project, launched earlier this term, culminating in its first informal performance for family members.

The session began with a demonstration of musicianship work led by tutor Iain George, including note reading and tuned percussion. The children then performed six ensemble pieces on violin, viola and cello, guided by Julie Robinson and Joshua Haydon.

In just half a term, participants have developed the ability to read musical notation, play with clear tone quality, respond to dynamics, copy rhythms and, crucially, stay in time together as an ensemble under a conductor.

Claire Harvey, Principal of Da Capo Academy, said:

“What has been most striking is not just the musical progress, but the confidence the children have gained. Some who were initially hesitant are now playing with real assurance, and they’ve built friendships with children from other schools along the way.”

The programme focuses on ensemble playing from the outset, alongside core musicianship skills, and is modelled on schemes used by the junior departments at the Royal Northern College of Music and Guildhall School of Music.

Saturday Strings runs weekly Saturday morning sessions for children in Years 4–6, with optional wraparound care and supervised transport.

The programme is currently offered free of charge, with a small number of places still available for the Summer Term. Applications close on Monday 20th April, and a further intake is planned for Autumn 2026.

The children will next perform at a full concert at the Town Hall on Saturday 11th July 2026.

Taking place on Saturday 16 May (12:30–13:45), this is a fantastic opportunity for Grade 5+ violinists to gain insight, inspiration, and expert guidance from a world-class performer.

What a fantastic evening at our JASTO Inters and Da Capo orchestra Concert on Saturday! 🎶

It was wonderful to see so many of our students performing with confidence and musicality, showcasing all the hard work they’ve put in this term. From first performances to more experienced players, every student contributed to a brilliant and varied programme.

A big well done to all of our performers — and thank you to the families and friends who came along to support them.

We’re incredibly proud of the progress being made across the academy, and we look forward to many more performances to come!
