While Oregon law requires your official legal witnesses to be 18 or older, the decorative marriage certificate in your county packet is not a legal document and has no age requirment.

If you have children, nieces, or nephews in the wedding, having them "sign" the keepsake certificate is a wonderful way to make them feel included in the ceremony.

Age Requirement: You must be 18 years or older. Oregon no longer allows marriage under the age of 18, even with parental consent.

Residency & Citizenship: Good news! You do not have to be a resident of the county, a resident of Oregon, or a U.S. citizen to marry here.

Family Restrictions: Oregon law does not allow marriage between first cousins.

Special Circumstances: Incarcerated or institutionalized individuals are legally allowed to marry, but they must obtain prior permission from their governing authorities.

In Oregon, there is a mandatory 3-day waiting period from the date your marriage license is issued. To ensure your license is valid in time for your signing or ceremony, you can request a waiver from the county clerk.

Here are a few quick details to keep in mind:🗓️ Ask early:

You must request the waiver first thing during your license appointment.

Fees vary: Many Oregon counties provide this waiver for free, but Multnomah County charges a $5 fee.

State boundaries: Out-of-state licenses, including Washington state marriage licenses, are not valid for ceremonies taking place in Oregon.
