Every photo tells a story 📸

Hear from artist Lorna Simpson, recipient of the ICA’s 2026 Meraki Artist Award, as she reflects on “To My Best Friend,” the title work of our exhibition and part of the ICA Collection. The installation brings together more than 100 found elements, including 85 photobooth portraits of unidentified Black individuals. Introduced in 1925, photobooths offered an early democratic form of self-representation, which Simpson transforms into a meditation on memory, absence, and identity.

In 2014, AAMARP artist Ricardo Gomez, who paints as Deme5, and Thomas "Kwest" Burns created Roxbury Love, a 100-foot mural that became a symbol of community pride. The mural was demolished in 2020, leaving behind painted architectural fragments.

“Say It Loud: AAMARP, 1977 to Now” closes this weekend! Join us as we take one last look at some of the artists that shaped this exhibition.

One of the earliest members of AAMARP was Barbara Ward, a self-taught soft sculptor who drew inspiration for her pieces from African mask-making traditions.

“Say It Loud: AAMARP, 1977 to Now” closes this week! Join us as we take one last look at some of the artists that shaped this exhibition.

Theresa-India Young's artistic practice transformed everyday materials, such as rope, grass, and sticks, into richly woven fiber sculptures.

Drawing from crafting techniques she learned from her grandmother and her travels in Africa, Young developed a practice of weaving works of art inspired by nature.
