How is it already Aloha Friday?! 🌺

It’s been such a fun week! The weather tried to keep us on our toes, but everything worked out perfectly... and we were even got to see a beautiful rainbow after our performance . 🌈

It’s also opening weekend for the live-action Moana! Are you guys going to see it? Wishing everyone an awesome weekend, and we’ll see you back on the beach Monday! ☀️

Come celebrate the 4th with us tomorrow!

Happy 250th birthday America!!! Please join The Family Beach to celebrate this Saturday. The town has been posting details for a few weeks and I will include all the links again. We start with the 4th of July Golf Cart Parade & Festivities at 10 AM with staging help from First Baptist Church of Surfside Beach. The parade will also include a brief ceremony honoring the nation’s founding with a flag presentation from WoodmenLife Myrtle Beach Chapter 1111 and the national anthem sung by Lori Coleman. Judging occurs at Neal and Pam's in Surfside Beach, SC , which will also host the town celebration from 12 to 3 PM, featuring Jim Quick & Coastline, Hula Show by Ohana Kahakai, as well as an Ice Cream Eating Contest sponsored by Drippy's Homemade Ice Cream. In the middle of it all, Salute from the Shore takes place right about 1 PM. The town has just about sold out of its 250th anniversary T-shirts and commemorative flags at Town Hall, but will have a very limited supply at the event. This is going to be a great celebration!!!

On last week’s post, a few people made comments about fireworks; I covered this last year but I will do so again. Town Council did not budget for fireworks this year. Fireworks on the 4th of July can cost up to $100,000—the cost is inflated, like buying roses on Valentine’s Day—a simple example of supply and demand. Some people mention tradition, but the last 4th of July fireworks show was in 2016, ten years ago. In the meantime, the town has allowed individuals to shoot fireworks on the beach and it produces a good show with audience participation—essentially the best of both worlds. And by the way, the budget that just passed for the next fiscal year also does not include Independence Day fireworks, so we will have the same plan next year. Another comment mentioned a drone show—about the same cost. An average drone show of 300 drones could run up to $90,000; perhaps more on the 4th. I believe we can enjoy the beach fireworks at zero cost to the town.

The beach renourishment schedule has changed again. There is no way the town can control this scheduling; the Army Corps of Engineers is running the project and it is subject to daily change due to amount of progress (or lack thereof) and equipment issues. But the bottom line is that the majority of the town’s beachfront will be open at all times and it is actually a pretty interesting project to observe. The town’s latest post can be seen here.

I also want to mention that the town will host another Hurricane Preparedness Seminar this year, next Thursday, July 9th. This is great info and it’s always a good idea to increase your knowledge and readiness. To register, click the link below.

Thanks for being a part of The Family Beach and for taking the time to read this; please stay engaged and involved with your town. Contact town staff or council members via phone, text, email, or especially through in-person meetings. Please attend public meetings and comment when you have something to say. I continue to hold open office hours most weeks on Thursday, from 3 to 4:30 PM and I remain available by appointment. This weekend, take extra time to consider the blessing of living in the greatest nation on earth and in our wonderful little town—Happy Birthday USA!!!
