Streets of Baku, Azerbaijan.

One of the most welcoming cities, where an afternoon walk down an alleyway will result in an invitation inside for tea. So much of the historical architecture remains intact and in use within the old city, now occupied with tea shops or rug and antique stores.

Khinaliq — a 5,000-year-old village tucked high in the Caucasus Mountains and one of the most remote towns in Europe. 🏔️ Getting here was an adventure in itself: a long bus ride followed by a winding drive through rugged mountain roads with a local driver.

At 2,300m above sea level (around the height of Mount Kosciuszko), it’s also one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in the world. According to local legend, this is where Noah’s Ark landed, and many here believe they are descendants of Noah himself.

The people speak Khinalug — a language so unique it’s unrelated to any other known tongue — but their warmth made it easy to connect. Some kids even knew about Sydney, and one farmer proudly showed me his goat he travels with in a bag on his horse’s saddle.

Also thank you for inspiring the soundtrack to my time here ♥️

Music video for UNTITLED001 screening tomorrow, the 12th of May at Miscellania.

“The song that catalyzed this project was born out of Jadu’s experience of moving between the community she was born into and the community she has chosen. It explores navigating these seemingly disparate worlds and the tension that arises from desiring acceptance from both. Drawing on these concepts, the film unpacks how individuals perceive and change themselves based on real and imagined judgment from others. This negotiation is depicted through three thematic sections, which will be embodied on the runway: Vulnerability, Alienation & Dominance.”

I’m very excited to share a project I’ve spent the last few months working on with an incredible group of people.

Here is the trailer for my short-film, “I AM NOT A VIRUS” which will be screened at ACMI cinemas on the 4th of May.“A short-film exploring identity in the face of crisis, discussing pandemic related racism and presenting a heartfelt counter-narrative from three young Asian Australians with strong ties to their community; Elle Shimada Music, a Japanese violinist, Ngoc Tran, business owner of Shop Bao Ngoc, and Cr Anthony Tran, Australia’s youngest Mayor.”

Words can’t express how grateful I am to these three incredible humans and their generosity in sharing their stories and reflections on a deeply personal topic, and I couldn’t have asked for a better crew of people that helped me pull this all together!

Special thank you to William Hamilton-coates, Maximiliano Lara-Oneto, Matthew Nguyen and Diletta Legowo for all of your assistance in this project, and to Human Rights Arts and Film Festival and Diversity Arts Australia for believing in this project.

These sand dunes and desert plains are remnants of huge lakes and rivers from the last ice age.
One of the earliest places of human inhabitation long before that too. It was such an incredible experience to be able to visit.

I’m beyond thankful to for sharing her words and wisdom with us.
I feel so fortunate to work with Elle to create this short film! Her openness and strength in this process was inspiring, and being able to connect and share these experiences was healing in many ways.

“A visual exploration of identity and discrimination, following musician Elle Shimada, as she shares her experience of Covid-related racism and the strength she has found in community and creativity.”

The film will be released soon by , thank you also to the wonderful team for all your work - .hamiltoncoates, , .wei, ,

When I feel stuck or restless, my normal instinct is to travel - I go back to Cambodia and instantly feel grounded. I connect to something outside of my self, family and culture reminds me I have a place in this world.
☀️
Being confined to the house for most of this year has really made me aware of these emotions, and analyse my desire to escape!
With everything that is 2020, it can be hard to find my footing and stay sane. I’ve adopted some healthy, and other not so healthy, practices that help keep me in reality. How do you ground yourself?
These photos were taken in Battambang, where my family were from and ancestors lived. The second image is from the day my family “introduced” me to my great grandparents, their ashes are stored in this beautiful golden pagoda and it is where their spirits are believed to live when they visit.
