Walking through the cattle herd you encounter so many different personalities. Most are very friendly and curious. Some are a bit stand offish and dont want to be pet.....

Then you will come across this cow. She has a quiet, wise dominance about her. A humble confidence that could only be developed by a long life. Today we wish grandma a happy 19th birthday.

Such a milestone for a cow. We have several of her daughters and granddaughters in the herd. We hope this trait has been passed on to them as well.

It is a pleasure to great you each and everyday and I find myself finding her each day to make sure all is well with her. She acts younger than some 12yr olds in the herd.

So thankful to have her in the Carter James Ranch herd

2024 ended with this heifer giving us a heifer. She is a small calf, about 40 lbs. She also came about a month earlier than expected. We prefer not to calve in the winter but we have a few animals that came in the Arkansas herd that will calve in Jan and Feb. Praying nothing calves starting Sunday and for the next 10 days with all the bad weather. But if it happens we are ready.

We had to help mom figure out the mothering thing a bit since she is a first time mom. Both are doing great. Jamie named this calf Sophie

You can take the guard dog out of the flock but you cant remove the guarding instinct from her.
Indie has become an indoor outdoor dog. In the summer she loves being "indoor Indie" as the loves the AC. Now that we are in fall she at times, wants to stay out all night on nice evening and protect the house. She sits in the front yard and monitors the night activity.

At 4:30 this morning I got up and called her in and she immediately went to sleep by the front door.

It has been a rainy Saturday which we are so thankful for the moisture. We weaned off some calves this past weekend and brought them back to Paola.

Indie decided she wanted to walk on the wild side with a stroll through the bulls! She keeps us on our toes.. love that girl

From 91 degrees a few days ago to a beautiful fall weekend the sheep are looking good and fat for winter and breeding season which starts on Nov 1.
Mack always sits like this waiting to be pet. He is a great sheep dog. His black mask gives him a fierce look and his deep bark is the best of all the guardians.. but oh those eyes... You can get lost in those stares. The Mack Daddy a good boy

It has been warm here late in October. The highs this week will hit 86 on Tuesday which is unseasonably warm we are thankful for the warmth as we are raising ine last batch of meat chickens for the winter.
If you drive by the ranch on a sub 50 degree night you will see the glow of the heat lamps for the next 3 weeks.

As we continue to build a direct to consumer food farm, we are humbled by the support and demand for pasture raised meat. This year we raised 750 broilers and next year are planning to raise 2000+ . Our egg laying flock is aging and slowing down so Jamie picked up 100 chicks that will start laying soon. The cattle herd has been growing and outgrown the Carter James Ranch in Paola. This life makes for some busy and long days tending the flocks and herds but it is far more gratifying that what the modern world offers.

They make such a great duo. We love all the guardians.. but Koda and Honey were our first guard dogs. They have a pure enjoyment and love for each other. We are so thankful for them and the job they do protecting the sheep.

Regardless of her situation, JoJo has happy ears. They are always listening.
JoJo has struggled in her 3 months of life with leg issues. As a new born she struggled to stand and nurse and started to fade way... But those ears were up even then!

Today was a good day as she walked better and got up easily. She may have a pinched nerve and we have been giving her some steroid and muscle relaxers for that. Next if chiropractic care if needed... I love JoJo and she has a fighting spirit. Some would say she has no value to the ranching operation, but I would say she has value to me. The time I spend bottle feeding her is food for the soul. We pray over her and give glory to God as she is a beautiful calf

JoJo reminds me daily to be joyful and to be listening even in the struggles of life. If life has you down... call us and stop by and meet JoJo, i think she will brighten your day.

Our freezer is filled with chicken, and we need to make space for the upcoming beef delivery in a few weeks. With these summer-like temperatures this October, fire up the grill and enjoy a last taste of summer.
