“Trầu vàng nhá lẫn trầu xanh
Duyên em sánh với tình anh tuyệt vời.”
Ông bà ta có câu: Miếng trầu là đầu câu chuyện. Miếng trầu khơi mở tình cảm giữa người với người trở nên gần gũi, cởi mở với nhau hơn – giống như ngày nay, mỗi khi gặp nhau, người ta hay mời nhau chén trà, điếu thuốc vậy. Trong gia đình người Việt truyền thống, ngày lễ, Tết lại càng không thể thiếu được cơi trầu với những miếng trầu được têm vô cùng đẹp mắt để trước là cúng tổ tiên, sau là mời khách.
Miếng trầu còn đóng vai trò là "đầu câu chuyện" trong chuyện đôi lứa. Nó có thể là điểm bắt đầu của một hành trình tình yêu đầy hứa hẹn, và đồng thời mang trong mình những giá trị truyền thống của văn hóa dân gian Việt Nam.
Trong lễ cưới Việt Nam của ông bà xưa có nghi thức nhai trầu được thực hiện bởi cô dâu – chú rể. Trên khay sẽ có trầu vàng và trầu xanh. Điều này thể hiện sự kết nối và đồng lòng giữa hai gia đình và hai người, tượng trưng cho sự gắn bó và tình yêu đôi lứa.
Việc nhai trầu được xem như một lời hứa hẹn và cam kết giữa hai người. Nó biểu thị rằng hai người sẽ cùng nhau chia sẻ niềm vui và khó khăn trong cuộc sống, và cam kết xây dựng một tương lai hạnh phúc bên nhau.
Ngày nay, việc sử dụng miếng trầu trong lễ cưới dù không còn phổ biến như trước, nhưng vẫn được duy trì ở một số vùng và trong những buổi dạm ngõ như một nét đẹp truyền thống mà ông bà ta để lại.

A Vietnamese proverb has a saying: The betel nut is the beginning of the story. This proverb highlights the cultural significance of betel nuts in fostering relationships and creating connections between people.
In the past, offering and sharing betel nuts were common social practices in Vietnam. It was believed that offering betel nuts to guests would create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, encouraging people to open up and interact more freely with each other. Just like today, when people meet, they often invite each other to share tea or ci******es to establish a sense of camaraderie and openness.
In traditional Vietnamese families, especially during special occasions like festivals and Lunar New Year, offering betel nuts was an essential custom. Beautifully adorned betel nut trays were used for ancestral worship as well as for serving guests.
The betel nut still plays the role of being the "beginning of a story" in the journey of a couple's love. It can be the starting point of a promising love story while carrying the traditional values of Vietnamese folk culture.
In the traditional Vietnamese wedding ceremony of the past, there was a ritual of betel nut chewing performed by the bride and groom. On a tray, there would be both yellow and green betel nuts. This ritual symbolized the connection and unity between the two families and the two individuals, representing the bond and love of the couple.
The act of betel nut chewing was seen as a promise and commitment between the bride and groom. It signified that they would share joys and hardships in life together, and commit to building a happy future side by side.
While the use of betel nuts in wedding ceremonies is not as common today as it used to be, it is still maintained in some regions and during certain traditional gatherings as a beautiful cultural legacy left by our ancestors.
